The speaker, who was a young man of twenty-five, with deep, lustrous eyes, soft womanly voice, and a tailor bill of more than two years' standing, looked up beseechingly at the girl ta whom he address- e-1 these words and waited for her to reply. But no answer came. In the we.it, where the land of crimson llxht that streamed up irota below the horizon told of the dying day, angry-looking clouds were gathering Mid an occasional vivid tluh of lightning told of an approaching storm. The wind, which came in fitful gusts, sighed in the branches of the lindens that surrounded Brierton Villa, nnd the husky, sigh of a large brindly cow sounded strangely in sccard with its weird Aurrtfnndmgs.
