Bailey, the new general auditor of the Santa Fe, earned his first money, af ter leaving a farm east of Osage, as a clerk in the Osage City postofflce. Mr. Bailey's people still live in the country, east of this city. He work ed later here at the Santa Fe depot with D. E. Cain who after going to Topeka obtained a place for Mr. Bailey In the auditing department at the general offices. Cut Out of Jail. George Durbln and Joseph Clouse escaped from the Har vey county jail at. Newton, and have not been recaptured. The- sheriff's daughter lent the prisoners a hatchet with which to chop kindling and with this tool they cut a hole in the wall of the Jail through which they escaji ed, lowering themselves to the ground with blankets. MEMORIAL TO GLADSTONE. Unveiling Occurred In London on Oc tober 21. Earl Spencer Is to preside at the unveiling in London of the national memorial of the late Mr. Gladstone on October 21, and the ceremony -will be performed in the presence of a re presentative assemblage of politi cians and civic notabilities. Invita tions are being sent out, but the pro gram has not yet been settled. Statues of the deceased statesman al ready exist in Westminster abbey and the central hall of the houses of par liament, the former having been erect ed at the public expense and the lat ter by private subscription. Jame3 Halloren and Henry Schroeder, neigh bors, got Into a quarrel over the own ership of a swill barrel at Topeka. Halloren seized a neckyoke and hit Schroeder over the head, inflicting a serious wound. Schroeder was sent to the hospital and Halloren was ar rested. Death of Noah Pixley. Noah Hum phrey Pixley, aged 75 years, died at his home near Wabaunsee. He came to Kansas in 1SG8 and settled on the farm where be died. He was a Mason and a distinguished farm gardner and horticulturist, establishing the sweet potato industry here. He leaves a widow and four children. Miner Crushed to Death. Martin Vouck. an Austrian miner employed in mine 31 of the Central Coal and Coke company, northeast of Pitts burg, was killed while at work in his "room" in the mine.
