Saturday jn. 27 DESERT GROWTHS KO 3- The Date Cactus, giving name to the well known Creek in Yava pai county, bears in the autumn a fruit, which when slightly toasted oloseiv resembles the flavor of roasted apples. Another variety, when bruised, makes an excellent substitute for soap in washing clothes, though rather too acrid for use upon tho skin; in this respect it resembles the Amote or Softp-root of Oalifor-, nip,. Other varieties furnish the fibre generally known as " Manilla,'' and Is in no respect inferior for cordage to that imported from the Philippine Islands: saddle-pads are made from it, and coal raatt rasses delightful to lie on in hot. nights. Fibrosity is characteristic of many of our desert growths. A company was formed recently near Los Angeles, and machinery put in operation, to utilize the fibre of certain " Desert Growths " in the manufacture of paper, bagg ing, cordage &a. We have no re cent information as to the result of their opera tious. Heteoroligical ...
