Cadets place high in rifle match [Newspaper Article] — Belvedere Citizen / Eastside Journal — 5 March 1980

Cadets place high in rifle match Garfield High School’s Junior ROTC rifle team, representing the Los Angeles School District, shot their way to four silver medals for finishing in the top five schools in the 12th annual invitational smallbore rifle matches. The matches were held Feb. 16 in San Diego. Representing Los Angeles were cadets from Garfield and Franklin High Schools. The four shooters who were on the winning team were Juan Ramirez, Francisco Rivas, Miguel Rivera and Marceliito Ureno. Juan Ramirez shot the fourth highest scare of the match, with a score of 24L The two-day tnp was under the supervision of sergeant major Ralph Licon, senior army instructor of the program at Garfield.

Recordkeeping course for small businesses A free 10-week basic recordkeeping and business management course geared for small business owners is being co-sponsored by the Government Accountants beginning March 4. The course will be held from 7 to 10 p.m' on 10 consecutive Tuesdays in Room C-236 of Salazar Hall on the Cal State L.A-. University campus. Instruction manuals will be provided for the course which will cover the problem areas of budgeting; accounting, payrolls, auditing, office management, taxes, and banking relations. Diablos to face Cougars The East LA Diablos will face the tough West Covina Cougars Thursday night. March 6 at Garfield H.S. The 7 p.m. contest will be the second time the teams met since Nov. 11 when the Diablos lost 1-0. Both teams are preparing for the State Cup Tournament, March 15. On Saturday, March 8 and 9 the Diablos will play a “Pre-State Cup” tonroey in Torrance against the Upland Astras, West Valley Tornados, and the Eaxtstde Rangers from Calgary, Canada. The Diablos are the first ELA team to be invited to this annual event.

At this point we look forward leading up to Spring Vacation which begins March 27 and ends April 2. During that vacation time Tom Woessner, Social Studies teacher, will be taking 32 students on a 7-day tour of the Gold Rush country on our school’s 10th Annual Motherload Trip. Students will be preparing themselves in these next weeks for this giant trek to Yosemite National Park, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Mercer Caverns, Donner Lake State Park, plus a tour of the State Capital in Sacramento. While preparations begin for this, another huge project is coming together. Psychotherapy offered at Cal State LA The Associated Clinics of California State University, Los Angeles, is now accepting referrals of individuals or families for psychotherapy. The new low fee service is provided by an M.S.W. social worker, and Is offered in conjunction with the Social Service Unit of the Clinics and the student field work program at the University. Although many clients of the Clinics are referred by schools, doctors, other clinics, or by community agencies, individuals and encouraged to come in on their own. The Associated Clinics are housed in the lower level, B wing, of King Hall on the Cal State L.A. campus which is located at the interchange of the San Ber- nardlno and Long Beach freeways, adjoining the city of Alhambra.
