A Graat Wash Day. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 9 July 1885

A Graat Wash Day. LJ'urla Cor. Boston Tnuuerlpt.] We have just had a mi-caremo such us Paris has not witnessed for several years. During the afternoon tho boulevards were so Thronged by sight-seekers that one could only move at a small apace. The ml-careme Is the great fete of the washermen and washerwomen. Homo of your readers.may ask what men have to do j> with the wash-tub. In Franoe they havo much to do with it. Here men claim their right.to wash and scrub, just as women claim Uv right to vote and to shoot their enemies. Both sexes batter your linen to pieces, burn it with sulphurio acid, and grind off your buttons in perfect amity. But on the tiii-carenio there in not a man nor a woman who would condesoend to look at a wash-tub. In tho world of soap and soda it is the day of days Then you must expect to see your buxom laundress attired as a much decollete, Juno in acavaloade-wita her husband as Jupiter or Apollo by her side In the evening the washhouses are turned in...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 9 July 1885

Di'Bisa the recent hostilities by : France against China, it was the custom of the Fieich to speak of the Chinese as '•barbarians,'' as it was that of the British to bo designate the Egyptians, although both China and Egypt were centers of < the arts and learning centuries before France and England were ever dreamed of by "civilization," in whose name now almost every invasion and wrong against ••barbarians" are justified. Tlie Chinese at last appear to be growing weary of this policy. They have .1 very good opinion of their civilization themselves, and are liecoming somewhat restive at tlie encroachments of that EnropeftU civilization which they in turn have considered barbarism. They are beginning to pay less attention to the arts of peace in order to better cultivate those uf war, which, until recently, they have comparatively 'neglected. A Chinese newspaper, published at Canton, strikingly represents this change of sentiment among its people, who, it declare-., have b...

YACHTING. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 9 July 1885

YACHTING. The San Francisco Yacht Club had a very enjoyable run up to Pittsburg Landing for their Independence Day cruise. The yachts started from Front street wharf at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon with the exception of the Chispa which left about half an hour later but overhauled most of the other boats coming in at Martinez but a few minutes behind the winners. The Lolita and Rambler however carried off the honors for the run, and the Lolita was the second boat to Pittrsburg, only the Chispa beating her. All the boats had a very good time around Pittsburg being hospitably entertained by Mr. Robinson, and on Saturday morning the start was made for the city. Only the Rambler, Startled Fawn and Lolita reached there that night, as the Frolic went to Vallejo and the Chispa did not show up until after midnight. All the boats were gaily decorated with Chinese lanterns on the night of the Fourth and seemed to vie with each other in the display of fireworks. The sloops Nellie Ripple and La S...

SAN RAFAEL LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 9 July 1885

SAN RAFAEL LETTER. (BY OUR REGULAR CORRESPONDENT.) San Rafael, July 8, '85. Editor News; The glorious National holiday has at last been checked off '85 calender. The day was most appropriately celebrated at San Rafael with parade, picnic and literary exercises. Company D, San Rafael and Petaluma. firemen, and citizens of Marin County composed the procession whichl was very creditably conducted. The boys in blue turned out sixty strong leading the parade, and were deuservedly complimented upon their fine appearance. After the parade the people began flocking in teams and afoot for Laurel Grove picnic grounds where the literary exercises were held. After the reading of the Declaration of Independance by Dr. C. N. Miller in a manner which made it new again, F. M. Angelotti our promising young District Attorney delivered a masterly oration at the conclusion of which Co. D proposed and was heartily joined in '"three cheers for our Frank." In the afternoon the usual games took place, amon...

SOCIETY. [Newspaper Article] — Sausalito News — 9 July 1885

SOCIETY. Society at Sausalito is a most fickle damsel; one day will find her galloping over mountains, camping on the beach or in the forest, sporting in the waves, enjoying a musicale, or in the dizzy whirl of ball room gayety, and another in the somber garments and seclusion of a nun. Our situation is so near the great metropolis that many of our transients come for a few days and are up and away again before contributing or enjoying their share of sociability. A leader of a set will drop out and several days elapse before another fills the place and the train of pleasure moves again. Sausalito has a permanent class of residents who should make up a most brilliant social circle, and we hope that when the buzz of our visiting society shall have ceased that the apparently austere and impregnable bulwarks of some of our castles on the hill will yield to the subtle influence of Orpheus and Terpischore, and that a winter season of social merriment will be inaugurated for the mutual enj...
