CARROLL, The bill. introduced in the legislature increasing the salaries of district judges was discussed, but the house was not in the salary raising mood. The mem- bers of the legislature work hard and are paid harder, and the present salaries of judges look as big as moons to some of the solons. The legislative caldron is seeth- ing and foaming in an effort to boil down the mass of bills now before it. On some issues the solons have dwelt together like brethren and on others fought themselves intp silence, but on the whole the apostles of peace and rest have had decidedly...

f "The Root of all Evil.' V *. « i?A m In First Timothy, 6th chapter, and 10th verse, we read: "The love of money is the root of all evil." I am sorrv to say this evil root has been planted in our own blessed land. It has grown to be a mighty tree. Its branches reach to the stars; its boughs have spread all over the land; its foliage is so dense the Son of Righteousness is shut out. It cannot shine through its branch- es. We may plant truth where we will, but as soon as it springs up it is smothered to death by the shade of this giant tree. Our schools, our institutes, our courts, our churches, are all under the shade of this great tree, a shade so dark that Satan, while travel- ing up and down in the earth is as safe as a rabbit in a pine thicket on a dark night. He can- not be seen only through a gos- pel glass and as gospel glasses are somewhat out of fashion but few ever get a peep at the old prince of darkness. I have heard of the dark ages. I think the present age is the darke...

After a great deal of worry and study we have at last figured out how so many country editors get rich. Here is the secret of their success. There is a child born in the neighborhood. The atteding ph}rsician gets $10. It is christened and the minister gets $5 and the editor gets $00. It grows and marries, the editor publishes another long-winded, flowery article and tells a dozen lies about "the ...

3 mmmmsi M| CIVILIZED MAN ALONE SNORED Unpleasant Habit Absolutely Unknown Among Savages. It Is a truism that n one ever heard of a snoring savage. In fact, if the wild man of the woods and plains does not sleep qnietly, he runs the risk of being discovered by his enemy, and the scalp of the snorer would soon adorn the belt of his crafty and more quietly sleeping adversary. With civilization, however, we have changed all this, de- clares a writer in Health. The im- pure air of our sleeping rooms induces all manner of catarrhal affections. The nasal passages are the first to become affected. Instead of warming the in- spired air on the way to the lungs, and removing from it the dangerous impur- ities with which it is loaded, the nose becomes obstructed. A part of the air enters and escapes by the mouth. The veil of the palate vi- brates between the two currents—that through the mouth and the one still passing through the partially closed noatrils—like a torn sail in the wind. The sno...

Compulsory Education. The following facts gathered from the statistical tables under the head of compulsory education found in tile recenfreport of the United States Commissioner of Education may be of interest to those who are advocating com- pulsory education and also to those who tfiink the present agi- tation sentimental and imprac- tical. Of forty-nine States forty two have compulsory education laws. Besides Texas the six States that have not enacted such laws are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. All belong to the old South, noted for conservatism, slow to adopt new ideals of pub- lic and social lite as it is reluct- ' ant to break away from the old agricultural traditions. No doubt however, such obstacles as lim- ited school equipment, inade- quate appropriations and a large negro population had their influ ence in these States. But that such obstacles can be overcome is demonstrated by the fact that Arkansas is to be found among the States...
