2w - MntMTmttm Viewpoint jMHmy2$f1995 Congress Cuts Federal Funding for PBS When Congress Should Accentuate the Positive Not Eliminate It Last Thursday USA Today announced that Congressional leaders are dead set on cutting federal funding for public televi- sion and radio. House Appropriations Subcommittee member Dan Miller R-Fla. said "The question is just how quick- ly they will be coming." Congressional leaders claim that the $1 billion a year that Barney the Purple Dinosaur brings in as the third richest entertainer (after Steven Speilberg and Oprah Winfrey) is proof that public broadcast pro- grams can stand on their own. However jusr because one PBS show has hit it big and raked in the bucks doesn't mean all PBS shows can stand alone. Many valuable shows such as Wall Street Week Stretch for Life Nova Texas Parks the Eyes on the Prize series and countless others would not be able to continue to broadcast without federal funding. Private donations do not seem to be enough to kee...

I have neither convicted nor set free this man's guilt or inno- cence because if I believed everything I ever saw on the television I would be one naive fool. OJ.'s guilt or innocence is in the hand of 12 jurors who after enough questioning to write a thesis on the person have that unwelcomed job in their hands. Cameras or no cameras that is the question. I remember the Bronco chase like it was just last week. I was watching the NBA finals when this important new flash came on the screen. I The Brand February 9 1995 Viewpoint 3 Intramural Teams Call for Advance Notice of Game Times For the last few years I have been participating in HSU Intramirals. For the most part I have enjoyed playing each sport offered. But I have often been frustrated by the failure of the Intramural Department to effec- tively schedule games and notify teams of them in advance. This has been a continuing problem which puts many teams at a disadvantage. A team dis- covering that they had a game that evening is hard pressed to notify their players who are pos- sibly off campus or working. And fraternity teams can never field a team on regularly sched- uled meeting nights. I want to say that I do under- stand more of the problem than just a regular student would. I worked on staff and as a ref for the Intramural Department two years ago. For the most part I understand how the system works and I understand the diffi- culties in scheduling 32 teams for time slots that are never enough. I also unde...
