UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES MANY LODGES AT CANBERRA Consequent upon the large number of men engaged upon the construc tion of the capital city, there are many Friendly Societies in Canberra in a strong and flourishing condition. in May of 192(5, the various lodges then operating at Canberra met to gether with the object of obtaining a hall suitable for holding their meet ings. A deputation approached the Chief Commissioner of the Federal Capital Commission in the matter, with the result that an excellent Lodge Hall at Eastlake has been built. This com mittee then formed was really the forerunner of the Friendly Societies' Council. In December, the Lodges were asked to send four delegates to a meeting * to discuss the formation of the coun cil, and after a lengthy discussion, the following resolution was carried: "That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirous of forming a Friendly Societies' Council." The delegates reported to their lodges, and at the next meeting held a fortnight...

The Historic Church at Canberra Yesterday was dedicated the site ot the Ang lican Cathedral on Rotten - bury Hill, but across the river flats on the northern side of the Molonglo Riror .stands the old historic Church of Can berra's early days. The Church of St. John the Baptist, built largely by the generosity of Rob ert Campbell, had its foundation stone laid on May 13, IS li, by the lb. v. Ed ward .Smith, first Minister ut the Queanbcyan-Canbcrra district, it was consecrated by Bishop Broughton on March 12, 1845. In 1850 Canberra was made a separate parish. The present tower, eastern nave, chancel and spire, date from 1865-1878.
