CRIMINAL COURT, LAUNCESTON. TUESDAY, JANUARY 23. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 3 February 1827

CRIMINAL COURT; LAUNCESTON, TUESDAY, JANUARY 23. His Honor the Chief Justice passed sentence of death on the six prisoners as mentioned in our last. The case of William Tuffnall who was tried on the same day, and, convicted of a rape on El- len Briggs, a child of colour, of nine years of age, on the 20th of May 1825,   had been put off last session, the child at that time not understanding the nature of an oath. Since that time she had been instructed by the Reverend Mr. Youl, and this day gave her evidence very distinctly, which put it beyond a doubt that the prisoner had completed what he had intended. The evidence of Dr. Macnab, who had attended the child,         clearly proved the fact, and corroborated the child's statement in many points. The Jury, without retiring, returned a verdict of Guilty, and the Judge imme- diately passed sentence of death upon him. Dennis Barry Patrick Lynch. Elishà Cooper, Hugh Galloch...
