NEWS BY THE MAIL. GENERAL SUMMARY. (From the Home News, May 27.) [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 20 July 1861

»EWS BY THE MAIL. GENERAL SUMMARY. (From the Home JNem, May 27.) XJNIVEKSAIJ attention is diverted for the hour from Europe to America. Italy fades before the stronger blaze of South Carolina and her Confederates; Naples yields in interest to Washington ; and even the Quadrilateral is forgotten in the curiosity with which in- telligence is looked for from the neighbour- hood of Norfolk Harbour. The whole face of things has undergone a revolution, from the Rocky Mountains to tlio Gulf ol' Florida. The motionless policy of the Washington Cabinet .has been suddenly roused into'activity, and-President Lincoln has illustrated the ambiguous reserve with which be entered \ipon office by a declara- tion of war. There is no longer nny doubt about the* shfipe tho American qmiriel is doomed to take ; although no man, even with these facts, for which thereisno redemp- tion, befbro bim, can venture to prophecy the issue. On the 5ih of May, the twenty days of grace granted by President Lincoln to...

The Courier. SATURDAY, JULY 20. 1861. [Newspaper Article] — The Courier — 20 July 1861

SATURDAY, JULY 20. 1861. Now that the evidence taken before the Select Committee with respect to the conduct and efficiency of the Native Police Force is in the hands of honorable membew, together with the Report of the Committee, we think it advisable to remind honorable members of the gravity of the questions which are thus brought hefore thom. The first duty, and one which devolves equally on every member   of the House, is to read the evidence. As this is very voluminous, it is possible that some of them may find it almost im- possible to do so before the time   appointed for the adoption or rejection of the Report. But, in such a case, it would be better, though no doubt a dis- agreeable alternative, to postpone the adoption for a few days. The next duty of each honorable member is to satisfy himself that the Committee have taken all the evidence within their reach. If it seem to him that important witnesses have been left unexamined, he should refer t...
