FARM AND GARDEN SOIL MOISTURE AND SOIL TILLAGE. An Important Matter Made Plain With Illustrations. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville and Yarra Glen Guardian — 23 November 1900

AND. BOIL MOISTURE AND SOIL TILLAGE. An Imiportaret Matter Made Plale WltS illustrations. Fvaporation of water from the surface of tilled soil dnring the warm season usually takes the wateraway faster than the clouds supply it. Our crops must depend for their needs more on the supply of moisture stored up in the great reser voir beneath than on the rainfall during the main part of the growing season. TILLAOE BAD AND GOOD, With a good depth of reservoir on soils with porous subsoil; and consequently with a free movement of the soil water, down in winter and, up in summer, and the economical use of soil moisture by. the prevention of excessive evaporation, a continuous sul,?y'ol moisture can be secured to the ioots even in a dry season. The upward nuove-ient of the soil water by capillary action to be free requires ce pact but porous soil. In freshly stir red soil the interstices are too large for such action, and here the upward move rient comes to a stop. In explanation of the foreg...

THAT Feeling so prevalent in the hot weather, which make men tired of life and work is heconting more common every year. Many attribute this to the climate, and, in fact, the climate is responsible -very slightest, however,. If you feel WEARY and lack energy, you may rest assured that your blood is thin, weak, or im pure, if it were rich and pure it would impart vitality and energy to every nerve and organ in the body, and the .whole system would be robust and healthy. When the system, is run ,down from weakness of the blood you become tired and WORNOUT and are only able to. do a, very slight amturit of work without feeling great fatigue. You have a constirit desire to lie down, and at the end of the day feel utterly worn-out and dispirited. You may by force of will, overcarne that wornout FEELING - for a time, but this course acts on the nerves and eventually results in "nervous prostrationr.' CORItESPONDEND3J. (Tle do not necessarily endorse, nor hold ourselves responsible for, the opinions of our correspondents.) THE SHIRE COUNCIL & THE DUTIES OF ITS MEMBERS. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. SIR,--Mr. Thomas.. Crowley in his letter in your last issue on the above question states that " Nothing is more annoying than to be subject to illegal rulings, and I am always ready to obey the chair when properly called on, and the Local Government Act pro vides a proper course in such cases that is -that the chairman shall quote the section under which he acts and gives his ruling." Now, Sir, as I was chairman at the last council meeting, and that gentleman refused to obey my ruling, it looks as if I gave an illegal decision. The question under con sideration at the time referred to was the manner in which the officers should be appoih-ted-, and - Cr. Crowley, in speaking' against the motion, per sistently rieftrred to a matter that had been dealt: with at a pievious meeting...

AN, EXCEL.LENT MEMORY. .--0g Lawyers are generally supposed to be sharper than the rest of the human race, but occasionally, a witness trips them. up. An eminent barrister once received a severe· epartee frori a witness that he Was attempting to browbeat. It was at a critical point in the case, and, in order to save his cause from defeat, it was necessary that the lawyer should impeach the witaess. He en deavoured to do it on the groiund of age. The following dialogu,e en sued : Barrister-" How old are you?' Witness- '- Seventy-two years." Barrister--' Your memory, ofcotirse, is not so brilliant and vivid as it was twenty years ago, is it I" Witness-" -' do no know but it is."
