SIR 31. D. HILL. ON DETENTIVE POLICE. (From the Spectator.) Tao Recorder of Birmingham has just made his annual memorandum on reform of the correctional lah ; the subject this year being that which he broached last year-the detention of notorious offen ders,in order to prevent them from adding to their criminal exploits. In the interval, the idea has met with much active criticism, and has efen tested by many objections:-that it would violate the liberty of the subject; that you could not technically prove criminal ia tent on the part of a man, however mc rally certain the fact; that after arrest ing him, and releasing him, you wonld be bound to arrest him on the old grounds on the next release to re-arrest again, and so on ad infinitum. tIr :ill now replies to several of these objections; showing that if the criminal has not some honest mode of livelihold, he must have a dishonest mode; that the process I of clearing himself would he easy; and that the fastidious punctilios which a...

THE VISIT OF THE PREMIER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE FRENCH REPUBLIC. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 12 March 1852

THE VISIT OF THIE PLE3HE-: TO THE PRF DISENT OF TIRE FRENCH RE PCBLIC. Loon John Rsosell's mission is said to b- r,.e sia:el by the crisis which threatens the stability of the French Neow Con;tir:tian, if not to involve France, in a repetition of the revolutionary scenne which epe!le*t her late King, and proe!aimed Louis Napoleon President. Be the missi:on of the noble Lf I for this purpose or not, the position of affairs in France is sn!licientlv alarming to call for every ait in averting the approaching ditl cnity and danger. Such a work is worthy the talerts and interposition of the Prime 3Minister of England, and if this he Lsrd John's important though not ostensibly revealed office, who does not wi.h his L.rdship entire success! ANIMAL MAGNETISM. [Newspaper Article] — Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer — 12 March 1852

ANI3MLL 3IAGNETISM. A snRIEs of very singular aid striking experiments it animal magnetisn was made at IIungerford Iall yesterday evening by 3I. Lassaigne, a gent!eman who has already, we believe, attracted isoe nlotice in the French :'pital by similar exhibitions. T he rep'resentation was a private ece, and was ::ttended by about 60 or 70 individuals, among whom~l were some distinguishedl members of the medical profession. M. Lassaigne did not attempt to appl- his skill to all comers, but confined the display of his powers to 31dlle. Prudence, a young wo man who Ihas accompanied him from Paris for the purposes of these expert ments, and whose apparently nervous and impressionabie nature must have offered a very thvourable subject for the magnetic operator. Under his influence, this I::d appeared as a piece of breathing or?mniation, possessed of no independent powers--thinking, feeling, knowing, only through his will. We shall procee d briefly to narrate the principal mental phenome...
