PERILS OF THE PACIFIC RAILROAD. [Newspaper Article] — Record — 2 December 1869

PERILS OF THE PACIFIC RAILROAD? -A tourist to California, says tha Springfield Republican of the 5th ins.* reports as follows:-"It will not do to report 'all-right' every time. Here we are at Byram, 800 miles' west "of Omaha, on the Union Pacific-road, where we are likely to remain for the next twenty-four hours, with a mashed^ up train and several serious injuries! I have no broken limbs, but a few; bruises and a wet trunkful of clothes:; About seven o'clock last night we ;hadl what they call in this section a broken, water-spout-that i6, a concentration of heavy showers, like turning" the] Connecticut River upside down in the air and letting it fall at once. Neither man nor beast can stand its full power, nor can a narrow 15 feet fill off the railroad, where we arrived at' two o'clock this morning. I could not, procure a sleeping-car berth, and, tired, home-sick, and nervous, I went forward to take an early smoke, when just as I had got fairly alight, crash, crash, went everything...

The North Foreland. CHAPTER XIII. (Continued.) [Newspaper Article] — Record — 2 December 1869

BY "KELP." - : . CHAPTER XIII. (Continued.) " She's got sternway, Solly ! get the helm: shifted;" and. he ran forward and got the headsheets borne well over to windward. : " She casts to starboard, sir ! " call ed out the quartermaster, and in. a few moments the vast fabric had sufficiently altered its position to fill her after yards, and, as soon as she was suf ficiently paid off, her head yards were hauled and she laid down for a board to clear the Foreland-all hands suc ceeded in again setting the mainsail in, the face of what had now risen to a "gale, and it was now simply a question of endurance with a dozen or less yards of canvas whether she could or not lay round the land, and the carrying on with the force of wind rendered it pro blematical how long rope, canvas, and spars would staud it-the fine old ship, however, steadily but surely held her luff . and crept to windward, though it was1, patent that it must be a close thing even if she held round. .
