THE DIPLOMAT. [Newspaper Article] — Wangaratta Chronicle — 25 April 1914

THE DIPLOMAT. On the 18th inst. we showed that Senator Millen, Minister for Defence, in his minute on the recent disposi tion to the Imperial fleet, totally misrepresented Australiani putlic opinion, contradicted his own pro posal for an Imperial Conference, and committed a grave indiscretion in assuming that the Australian navy was to be confined to Australian waters, This view of the situation created by the Commonwealth Min ister is confirmed by Mr. Bruce Smith and Mr. Conroy, both Liber als, in the House of Representatives, Mr. Bruce Smith described the Min Ister's minute as "crude and un statesmanlike," "'ill-advised," and wished to dissociate himself from it. No stronger condemnation could be made than this of a prominent Lib eral supporter, and one who is in the front rank. He added : "The Minister for Defence seemed to have forgotten that the movements of the Imperial Navy were not a matter for the man in the street. Members knew very well that England and the Empire had jus...
