"TRADITION" AND ENGINEERS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 11 May 1914

? ^ ? _ 'TRADITION' AND ENGINEERS. According to 'The Sanitary Record and Munici pal Engineering,' President Shenton, recently addressing the Society of Engineers, 'urged that engineers should combine in the public interest to make it impossible that their work should be given to persons outside the profession.' What! Great Trades-Union Horrors — likewise 'professional dignity,' 'tradition' and sundry, conservative absurdities! Has the President failed to realise that he is not in Australia, and that he is liable to be hanged, quartered and dragged as an anarchist 'under the English cd'de'6f 'prof essibhal ethics?' '*' ? \Of course, the President's advice was adopted by the Institute of Local Government Engineers of Australasia from its inception. But then it is a 'colonial' institution, with more respect for the square deal for its members under the rules of the game of the time, than 'tradition' and similar forms of cashless dignity.

THE BUCKLAND PULLEY. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 11 May 1914

— ? — ? ? i THE BUCKLAND PULLEY. '' By replacing metal pulleys with Buckland wood-split | pulleys the same power will drive more machines, and the j existing machines at the same output can be run on I less power. That is a big claim, but it is made with j confidence by. Buckland Bros., of Kent Street, Sydney, responsible for the wood-split pulley. It is explained 'that the rim of' the Buckland pulley is made from wood j selected for its belt-gripping qualities, and is specially [ suited- for Australian conditions. These pulleys are 50 j per cent, lighter than the metal variety and require less I power .to rotate them. The lighter the shafting, the lower the bearing friction, which is a great saving in power. . The Buckland pulley is easily fixed, requiring no key way to be cut and obviating the dismounting of the shaft. The halves can be bolted together over the shafting and fixed firmly by any workman in a few minutes. Large stocks are always on hand, so that there is no delay in ...

H. E. PRATTEN FOR PARLIAMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 11 May 1914

H. E. PRATTEN FOR PARLIAMENT. j President H. E Pralten, N.S.W. Chamber of Manu factures, is among those chosen for final selection as a j Senate candidate in the Liberal interests. But whatever ' party he chose to represent, H. E. Pralten. in our opinion, : would be an acquisition to Parliament. He represents that Big Australianism and the gospel of the square deal, ' that Australian politics are demanding. Quick-witted, administratively proved, and possessing the rare com- : bination of oratory of the practical kind and literary .ability, he is of the type indicated by the people when they say — as they are always saying — ''We want the right ! men and our Parliament will be all right.' With a few j Prattens, Braddons and other commercial leaders in Par- ; liament, the puny minds would be extinguished and ! Australia would be given a richly-merited show. j
