FEDERAL ELECTIONS. SENATOR BARNES AT PENS HURST. Senator Jobn Barnes, one of the Labor candidates for the Senate, ad dressed _a well-attended meeting in the Mechanics' Hall on Monday evening, the chair being occupied by Mr. M. O'Leary, who briefly "introduced the candidate. Senator Barnes, who had a- great re ception on rising, expressed his plea sure at the opportunity of addressing them. The present election was a contest between progressive democracy and reactionary conservatism. He proceeded to deal with the question of the double dissolution. Labor had fought for years for what they believed to be justice, and their Work culminat ed in the troubles of 1890, which para lysed trade throughout the country. DUNKELD 11-13 BEAT PENSHPEST 9-6 * In anticipation of a good game a large crowd assembled on the local ground on * Saturday last to witness the meeting' of tbe Dunkeld and Penshurat teams in the third rourd of the competition. Ihe day was an ideal one for the popular winter "Came, and the ground bein<£ in good order, the play was generally of a- high order, Both teams had a couple of their best men out, the. most notable absentee* for the vis itors being Ford and Propisch V others, and Will and Wat. Clark were & great loss •to the locals. There was little 60 choose between the teams Dunkeld excelling in crashes, while Penshurst were generally best in the open play. " A meeting of members of the Western and Murray Bacon Company was held in the Mechanics' Hall on Thursday afternoon when there wereaboat 20 in attendance, Mr W. McGloin bding voted to the chair. Mr M Bourke, Chairman of the Company attended with the object of laying before the members the position of the trade and the advantages to be derived from co operation. He gave a lengthy address showing from a study of statistics that every few years farmers are encouraged by high prices to greatly increase the num ber of their pigs, then the sum paid for them is so low.that they are obliged to get rid of them at any cost practically giving them away, and indeed in many case* far mers had been compelled to destroy them, or release them at the most suitable cover on their way returning from market.
