ATTACKED BY A SHARK. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 February 1906

ATTACKED BY A SHARK Numerous reports have lately ?cen appearing in 'the Sydney apors concerning the numbers of sharks seen at ocean bathing places, and giving warning to swimmers not to be too daring. It stands to reason that if these fe rocious monsters are so thick near the shores that they would pene trate some distance inland in the -jalt water rivers. . . . . That this is ? unfortunately Hhe case was tragically proved on Sun day afternoon, when a man named William Joseph Dobson met his death while swimming in George's River, about two or three miles above Como Bridge— a shark hav ing savagely attacked him. The unfortuuate man was one of a party of picnicors who left Petersham for a day's outing at Como. A boat was hired, and the pleasure-seekers rowed up to a spot known as 'The Moons.' After luncheon the male members of the party went for a ramble, and as the water looked very tempting Dob son decided to have a dip. None of the others could be prevailed upon to enter the water,...

The Curse of Centralisation. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 3 February 1906

The Curse of Centralisation. A correspondent from Eden writ ing to the 'Daily Telegraph' over the pen-name of 'One of the Ear lier Pioneers' says: The residents of Sydney, having met and ventilated their grie vances against the actions of the Federal Parliament since Federa tion, have made out a very weak case. In the principal resolution moved by the Lord Mayor, only one Federal sin is given promi nence to, the selection of the Fede ral territory for the seat of go vernment. Three members of the House of Representatives are named by some of the speakers as traitors to New South Wales. And for what reason? Because they did not vote to have the Federal capital placed as near as possible to the 100 miles limit to Sydney. The other New South Wales mem bers of the House of Representa tives who voted against Dalgety are no doubt held to be patriots. They voted in the interest of Sydney, whilst the three named voted in the interest of the Com monwealth, New South Wales in cluded. Do we se...
