Alexandra & Yea Standard PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, JUNE 11, 1909. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 11 June 1909

tiardra & ý qa a itandaitd PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY. NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, JUNE 11, 1909. THE Federal Labor Government, and the South Australian Liberal Labor Government have both received a severe set-back. The death of the South Australian Labor Premier, Mr. Price, made tha position of the acting premier, Mt. Peako, an awkward one, to say the least. But his attempt to surmount the dilliculty he was placed in is extraordinary. With a following of eight he has ignored both the Labor and Liberal parties. and has set him self the task of forming an administra tion in a House of forty-two. As suredly, he will come to grief, and that quickly. As regards the Federal Labor party, their downfall is now a matter of history, the only thing in connection with it that is prominent is the amount of abuse and investure that has been hurled at the Liberal cornm bination. The least that was to have been expected from the defeated go vernment was a straightforward recog nition of the...

Correspondence., 1We do not hold osrselves remponsible for the opinions expressed by our correspoudent],. .a LETTER OF INDIGNATION. STO TTIL r.EDrr OF TIILE sTANDAiRn 81t,-- At the delegate meeting in connection with the Aloxandra Foot ball Association held on Saturday last, a n>tion was carried by five votes to three that I should not be permitted tb take part in football matches throughout the district on account of tot being a resident. Certainly, I arn aot u resident, yet I spend more time iq tite district than in any other in the Strite. It is very unfair and unspurta mnaikeo for a person to be debarred from playing the winter game because be follows: an occupation which does agt permit of his living always in the district. During last year I played more than once with the Alexandra club in the same association, under the .Inmo rules, yet noobjection was taken. As a fair-minded sportsman, and one believing in fair play, I might mention I that the delegate who moved the motio...

Attempted Suicide. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 11 June 1909

Attempted Suicide. James Switzerland Higgins. a well.known resident of Upper Thornton, was seized with a mad fit yesterday morning, when he attempted to do himself to death with the aid of an ugly locking butcher's knife (not very keen we should imagine) and an axe. It appears his brother, on entering the house, found James performing upon him self and bleeding from several gashes in the throat and head. The brother called, in a neighbor. J. Hartley and had James brought to the Alexandra Hospital, where it was found that none of the wounds were dangerous. Several stitches were all that was needed and the patient was soon able to relate how lie canme to turn upon his own dear self in such a savage manner. It is stated that Higgins, not being able to knock his brains out with an axe tried to end his existence with a knife. He failed in each attempt and is now progressing favorably under the immediatu care of Mr It is not known whether Higgins is mad. Considering the " mess " he made o...
