The Pastoral Industry. Forty-Four-Honr Week. keduced Bates of Wages. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 13 May 1922

The Pastoral Industry. —oOo— Forty-Four-Hour Week. Reduced Rates of Wages. An award of great interest to the pastoral industry was made in the Commonwealth Arbitration Court by the President, Mr. Justice Powers. The matter was before the Court in   the form of two claims. One was by the Australian Workers' Union against the Pastoralists' Federal Council of Australia and others. The other was a counter-claim by the pastoralists against the union. Both claims were in respect of the wages of shearers, shed-hands, cooks, and others, as well as in re- spect to hours and conditions of   work. Evidence in the case was   taken in Sydney.   His Honor held that a forty-four hour week should be the standard for shearers instead of forty-eight, as worked previously. This means that the men will work forty-four hours unless the finding is success- fully attacked in the Full High Court. This was the union's solitary victory. The extraordinary cl...

Metropolitan Notes Brisbane, 2nd May, 1922. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 13 May 1922

Metropolitan Notes *V\AA/VVVWVVVVA^VVVVVVVVVVVVVW*r Brisbane, 2nd' May/1922 Ibe Sunday "Sua" has again johanged hands and belongs to Mr 0. M. Dash, the well-known cham pion Queensland organiser in big jthings,. The paper has never got in jto the right hands; its various former partnerships were often weakened by men who wrote leading articles with carpenters' lead pencils. This time Six. Dash has secured such a pro portion of the shares that he is the absolute master of the concern. Already, in less than a week, he has made several radical changes. Bris bane can stand a well conducted Sunday paper on the lines of the fimlney "Sunday Times" or the Syd ney "Sunday Sun" for our Sunday "Daily Mail" is e huge conglomeration of uninteresting stuff, and the lively little "Patriot" is too small to be ac ceptable to the general run of Sun day readers. The Gympie seat is likely to be torfanlsed by the Nationalists, and perhaps by the Country Party also. The present strength of the Country Par...

NOTES & COMMENTS By FREELA NCE [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 20 May 1922

' ■ m m ■ B» FitEKLi act: While speaking at Coorparoo the other day Mr. Pry, M.L.A., made a point of referring to the hardships and anxiety imposed on the woman of Queensland at the present time, an^ as they have votes and there is an election looming in the distance. It seems a good line to adopt He said that no one knew better than the women the mental agony of the domestic worry, trials, privations and suffering which unemployment brought to the home; and in the homeB of thousands of unemployed In Queensland to-day distress had east its gloomy shadow over all the hopes and comfortB of home life. Mr. pry then went on to show how the Government was respon sible for all this. "The intense suffering of the former wage-earner* who was now unemployed, and of his wife apd children, could be laid to the door of the present Govern ment, which had proved its inability to properly function as a Govern ment, an,i during its seven years' occupancy of the Treasury benches had never shown a pro...

Mr. J. Hempenstall Returns. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 20 May 1922

Mr. J. Hempenstall Returns. —ouo— Some time back the "Champion" chronicled the return of Mr. Edward Hempenstall, otherwise "Ned,' from q trip in which he saw a good deal of this old mud ball of ours, and inci dentally livened things up at Aus tralia House in London. The wonder is that they did not run him. in under the War Precautions Act or have got Lloyd George to especially exteng the provisions of "Dora" to him. For the benefit of the uninitiated "Dora" is not a young woman, but is the abbrevi ated form of Defence of the Realm Act, under which anything was t>op sible. If Charles Stuart, of lamented memory, had only had the nous to have a similar Act in his time, -ban the whole course of English history might have been changed. Now we have to chronicle the re turn of another member of that woil known—we nearly said famous—Arm of Hempenstall Brothers from a trip The prodigal who has returned to the fo^ on this occasion iB Mr. Joseph Hempenstall, otherwise "Joe" to his legion of...

A Fallacy Exposed [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 20 May 1922

A Fallacy Exposed Taxation is a subject that la nq| frequently dealt with by Boap-booi orators. They are always willing tf tax some one else as long as fluff escape themselves, and with a vitp! to showing how this could he donti they glibly prate about a "tax on wealth." Exactly what wealth com prises or how it is to be taxeg ttMJT do not explain, nor do they 1mov>, All they are concerned about is to tickle the ears of their hearsnj with phrases which sound well. It |* usually the ignorant who make the most noise, and in the majority of instances the individuals who pOH~ stantly talk about taxing wealth. are not acquainted with even the rudi ments of the basis of taxation, Th£j and many of their hearers hare • hazy sort of idea that somewhere In Queensland untold riches are in ex istence, and that they can be partly or wholly commandeered by taxa tion. Such is far from being Un case. Addressing a meeting of the State Council of the Queensland branch of the Australian Railway Unio...
