Jarreau's jazz delights Blossom crowd [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 6 August 1981
Jarreau's jazz delights Blossom crowd By DEBI M. TRARES The crowd of about 9,000 d gathered at Blossom was patient and quiet as it waited almost an . hour for the opening act of : Monday night’s concert to appear, | and ultimately for the sounds of , the jazz singer they were eagerly i anticipating. This crowd was there to listen to and help create some jazz. And since the most important element of jazz is emotion, this crowd wasn’t about to waste any of it senselessly clamoring. There would be an ample opportunity to effuse their feelings and emote, but not before the time and atmosphere was right. And that time-tested adage all good things come to those who wait well, once again it proved itself an applicable platitude. THE TECHNICAL ability, natural inclination and sensitivity of Guitarist Lee Ritenour, a man who made his first professional debut in 1964 at the age of 12, was more than inspiring. It was, at times, astonishing. A weighty, forceful and versatile young musician, Rit...

Allman Brothers improve with age Country-rock show mellow audience [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 6 August 1981
Allman Brothers improve with age Country-rock show mellow audience By BARB EVANOSKY The Allman Brothers Band has survived personality conflicts, numerous personnel changes and tragic deaths in the decade since it was formed. But struggling through the bad times has only served to improve the musical output of the band and the appreciation of its fans. The Allman Brothers Band proved to the somewhat small and laid-back crowd at Blossom Music Center Tuesday that if nothing else, its music has not suffered. THE OPENING NUMBER, “Revival” from one of the bands earliest albums got the show mov- ing and gave each of the men in the seven-member group a chance to show-off. The instrumental is fastpaced and has a sort of infectious melody which rings in your ears and makes you wish there were words to sing along. Drawing on the audience’s immediate response the band announced that their new album, Brothers of the Road will be released soon and played several songs from it. The new single “Str...
Springsteen leaves no doubt who's the Boss [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 6 August 1981
Springsteen leaves no doubt who's the Boss By BILL LACH It seemed like a scene out of an old sci-fi film last week between Wednesday and Thursday nights in Richfield and greater Northeast Ohio. This was “the day the earth stood still.” Not because of a royal wedding in England but because of two royal performances at the Richfield Coliseum by a man known in rock-n-roll circles as “the Boss,” Bruce Springsteen. From the time he came on stage Wednesday night until he left after the last chords of the last encore early Friday morning it seemed as if time had stood still for area concert-goers. Undeniably the boss of live performers, Springsteen played the role Michael Rennie acted out in the 1951 film and had his audiences helplessly suspended in time. The sheer energy of his performance on stage made it seem as if everyone else were standing still. Unlike the two shows the Boss did in October of last year, the audience was responsive to each selection of the 28-song set. The last time...

Ronstadt's show unusually disappointing [Newspaper Article] — The Summer Kent Stater — 6 August 1981
Ronstadt's show unusually disappointing By CHUCK POLIAFICO and JEFF GALLATIN If one missed Linda Ronstadt’s two-night performance last week at Blossom Music Center, they should not fret. All one needs to do is play her Greatest Hits album, hold a picture of her standing before a microphone, and they would get the same sensation as those who were present at her concerts. Ronstadt, who is one of the best vocalists in rock, pop and country music today, unfortunately gave one of the worst and shortest performances of the summer. It lasted approximately just under an hour. INSTEAD OF acting like a professional who has been performing for nearly 20 years, Ronstadt acted like a child, staring at the stage floor and grasping at her first two fingers on her left hand between numbers. The problem with the concert seemed to stem from the control and enthusiasm which Ronstadt did not show during her performance. It appeared that she continuously went to her band, asking questions and looking co...
