NO CHARGE FOR EXAMINATION . There is not another o 0 ice in the city of Champaign that Is visited by more people than that of The BrltshAmerlcan Medical Institute . Many of these patients beard of the wonderful succes of their new treatment at the other otlices of the Institute in this State , and when . they learned through the columns of the press that a branch of the Institute - _ « ras to be PERMANENTLY LOOAfPJ ) in Champaign they were not slow to take advantage of the opportunity to be treated by these eminent specialists . AMERICA'S TOBACCO BILL . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 19 March 1903

AMERICAS TOBACCO BILL . Retail Value ol the Output of Clfsnra , ClustiretteN , Etc ., Is Iluced at $ 500 , 000 , 000 a Year . The trust , has gone into the manufacture of cigars . It has been in business less than two years and during the past 12 months it produced about a billion cigars . As the total production of the country is approximately 7 , 000 ,- 000 , 000 this represents a very fair amount of business for an infant concern . This has been a period of remarkable expansion in the cigar trade , however , and the production of tho American Cigar company represents just about the increase for the year-, so that the new enterprise has not interfered seriously with the independent manufacturers , says Leslie s Monthly . The enormous extent of the tobacco business in America may be realized from the fact that 7 , 000 , 000 , 000 cigars , 3 , 000 , 000 , 000 cigarettes , and 280 , 000 , 000 pounds of manufactured tobacco and 15 , 000 , 000 pounds of sUufE are produced every year . ...

ABOUT SUBMARINE CABLES . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 19 March 1903

ABOUT SUBMARINE CABLES . How Tlify Ilnvc Multiplied Since thfFIr . it Uiw Was l . nld Half a Century A » o , It is more than 50 years since the first submarine cable for commercial use was laid in the straits of Dover , but nil the work since ISfll in reticulating the ocean beds with 200 , 000 miles of cable lias been a ( raining for the severer problems of the Pacific , a deeper body of water , with longer spans , than any previously encountered . All the other 1 , 7 , > 0 cables , little and big , have afforded lessons of value for this , the boldest undertaking of the kind .. As usually happens , the Pacific no sooner has one cable stretching front Asia to Xorth American shores than it becomes possessed of two . Apparently nature abhors a monopoly no less than it does a vacuum . While the $ 375 , 000 , 000 invested in submarine cables pays very well on the whole , ways a writer in the Xorth American Review , it may be doubted whether at first thetwo Asian-American cabl...

^ s ^^ ^ mi ^ [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 19 March 1903

^ s ^^ ^ mi ^ THURSDAY , MARCH 10 , 1003 GOOD ROADS . April 10 there will he held at Springfield a good roads convention . Champaign county supervisors ought to go down there in a body aud get enthused • with the good roads idea . This county is one of the richest in the state , and has about the % vorst roads possible , with the greatest need of good ones . The supervisors of this and every other county ought to inaugurate a systematic building of good roads . A good plan , and one followed by most counties that are up-to-date , is to arrange to make a given number of miles every year , beginning at the county seat . It is surprising how few years it takes to reach every part of the county . The state ought to furnish convicts at a nominal sum per day to work on the county roads , the county paying for the service . This would take convict labor out of competition with free labor , and they would be doing something for the good of the honest citizens , who are taxed to support them...

HUMAN AND ANIMAL MIND . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 19 March 1903

HUMAN AND ANIMAL MIND . There l » I . eNN UlllVrciioe lletneeu Tin : m Thnn . Most People Imagine . The fact may not be flattering to . the human race , but it is nevertheless true , as recent scientific investigation proves , that there is very little difference between tlie minds of animals and those of men . Those variations that exist are those of degree rather than of quality . On the whole the investigator in question thinks that animals certainly have some glimmering of reason . With regard to the senses of hearing and siidn he has found that some animals can hear sounds inaudible to Us and can perceive rays of light that are invisible to the human eye . Atmospheric vibrations varying from 33 to 30 , 000 per second strike the human ear aud produce the sense of sound . Rut certain animals can hear vibrations more rapid than this—that is , they can hear higher notes than we can , says Nature . In the same way vibrations of the ¦ ether impinging on the human retina produce the s...

MEDICAL PRACTICE IN INDIA . [Newspaper Article] — Urbana Daily Courier — 19 March 1903

MEDICAL PRACTICE IN INDIA . It Has Some Very Carious Sides for Professionals Engaged in Healing :. A correspondent has sent us from Calcutta a collection of anecdotes bearing on the supposed efficacy of contact with live animals in the treatment of certain morbid conditions , says the London Lancet . Some 60 years ago , he says , there was a great Ivaviraj or Bengali , physician in JTuddea , whose name ¦ was either Janardan or Jaggannath . This worthy follovfd the method of the ancient school of Indian practitioners , and was , moreover , a specialist in the animal cure . When sent for to attend a young man , suf ¥ ering from asthma he announced , that he -would employ the goat treatment . Ghee prepared with , goat s flesh wis administered internally and a goat which made itself disagreeably perceptible to the nasal organs was brought into the room three times a day . The patient inhaled the od . or , made use of the animal as a pillow , hugged it duringhie paroxysms , and recovered...
