A vein of coal from 25 to '30 feet in thick ness has been discovered at a depth of 1,800 feet by a company drilling for oil near this place. James New man, a prominent farmer living two miles west of Cummings, Atchison county, was struck by a fast Santa Fe stock train and instantly killed. He was walking on the track when the train rounded a sharp curve and caught him. . Frats Drop Behind. An investiga tion of school records at Lawrence shows that members of the high school fraternities are inferior in scholarship to those who are not mem bers. This is the basis for the fight the teachers are making to abolish high school frats. Suicide Smashed Furniture. Jas. Dougherty, a laborer, broke into a physician's office at Newton and took a quantity of atropine. He was found in a dying condition after he had de molished nearly all the furniture in his struggles.
