A TAM'ARLK WORK. The Centennial History of the lni ted States, from the Discovery of the American Continent to the Close of the First Century of American Indjj pendens. By James D. McCabe, Author of "A Manual of General His tory," "The Great Republic," Etc, Etc. It is a well known fact that the great mass of our people are compell ed to rely, for their knowledge of the history of their country, upon the outline works intended for the use of schools, which by their very ua turo ate brief ; designed for the com prehension of children, and in every way unsuited to the adult mind. Tbore has long been felt a genuine want of a History of the United States, covering the whole period from the discovery of the Continent to the pres ent day, and presenting in a succinct and comprehensive - form the history of our country through its various pe riods, from a higher and more thought ful standpoint than would be proper in a school history. This demand we are happy to say is satisfactorily met in...

FIRST pi;bi.ic hfahinij of the disc. l.AKATIO.N. The Declaration was written by Jefferson, as he himself stated in a letter to Dr. Mease, in his lodging house at the south-west corner ofMar ket and SeTcnth streets. The house is still standing, and is occupied by a tailor, who shows his patriotism by calling his shop the "Temple ofLiber ty Clothing Store." The instrument was signed, as our renders know, in the east room of the State-house, on the lower floor. It appeared in the next day's paper (side by side with an advertisement of a negro child for sale who had the measles and small-pox,) but was not officially given to the peo ple until noon-day on the 8th of July, whea it was read to a large concourse of people in the State-house yard by John Nixon, deputed to the task by the Sheriff of Philadelphia, who had received it from the committee. The stage on which the reader stood was a rough wooden platform on the line of the eastern walk, about half way be tween Fifth and Sixth stree...
