?taf?Mtijgemtiz CAMPBELL* FBEW & CO. WEO.VESDAT MOR.MXU. JEHE IS. This fall the people of West Virgin ia will be called upon to elect State officers, members of Congress and county 'officers. Our correspondence i from various parts of the State indi- < cates a wide spread, and spreading, popular interest in the opening cam paign. Apparently the feeling is quite i equal to that manifested a few weeks ago on behalf of the Constitutional , Amendment. We have been surprised at this fact thus early in the Summer, ere yet a Convention has been called, and even before candidates for the promioeot positions have been named. Such an interest is indeed very unusu al. It was to be expected after all the long continued excitement of the war and of the subsequent elections, that we would have had a sort of reactionary period, during which the people would almost disconnect them selves with elections. But apparently that time is far off, if, indeed, it is to come at all. One of the lessons...

UktSMltgmat. CAMPBELL, PKEW & CO. EDITORS AND PROPRIETORS. TIIIRSDAY JIORXIXd. JUKE 14. Death of un Old Citiun. Our community was shocked yester day by a telegram from Logans port, Ind., announcing tlio sudden death of WM. F. Peterson, Sr., or this city, who was temporarily sojourning at thai place. He was unattended by any member of his family, to whom the event was altogether unexpected, he . having been in his accustomed vigorous health upon leaving home u few days before. These . circumstances render ?this sad event all the more afflicting to the bereaved family who have the heartfelt sympathy of the whole com munity. Mr. Peterson was one of our oldest and most worthy and respected citi zens. A great many years of the long life thus suddenly closed, were spent here in business more or less connected with the public interests of the city, which he had seen grow up, and helped build up, from small beginnings to its present dimensions. At the timo of his decease he was in his e...

Wbt*3atMt?tm*r. CAMPBELL, FBBW & CO. ZDITOKS AND PBOPKI* lOBS. IdDlV JCi?E It. We Shall probably not be able to give oar readers the exact! vote on the Amendment to the State Constitu tion. until the official returns are opened in July. Il appears reasonably certain, however, that the majority ?? for ratification " will not fall below 7,000. The vote polled Is a large but by no means a full one. While the vote cut is probably heavier in many of the counties than any since the breaking out of the rebellion, still it is far from being equal to the nnmber registered. In tbia county we believe the number of votes cast wa* some six or seven hun dred less than the number registered. In Kanawha county the disparity was much greater, in other counties per haps as great, and in all very consider able. Of all those who were registered but did not vote for or against the amendment, it is safe to say that eight tenths are loyal men, and will co-ope erate with the Union party this fall. Ever...
