LOCAL TOPICS. A. S. Kelsey, one of the pioneers of »the lower end of the county, met with a .very serious accident at William Good enough's ranch on Rattlesnake Flat last Wedenesday morning, says the Lind Leader. Mr. Kelsey, who was out with a threshing crew, was on top of the engine to see about something when a set-screw on the shaft caught in a small hole in the leg of his overalls. To free himself Mr. Kelsey jumped, but was caught in such a manner that every spoke in the fly wheel, which was running at the rate of 165 revolutions per minute, struck his left wrist He was not released from this position until the engine was stopped. Besides having his hand so badly mash ed that it will undoubtedly have to be amputated, he is very severely bruised about the body. Rev. and Mrs. T. H. Fertig leave to morrow for Waitsburg, where the min ister is assigned the church work for the coining year. Mr. Fertig has been the beloved pastor of the M. E. church at this point for the past three ye...

LOCAL TOPICS. Paul Compton, the efficient manager of the Walla Walla Live Stock Co.'s big ranch on Cow Creek, was in the burg on a provision purchasing expedition yester day. LOCAL TOPICS. Wm. C. Moore, an old standby stock man and farmer, accompanied by his wife, is spending the day in town. Twen ty years ago he was raising horses and cattle and was the owner of Sheep Springs ranch eight miles south of town. Then bunch grass was knee high and from Snake river to the Columbia was one unbroken range, the stockman's paradise. Since then the order of things has been changed. Farms have divided the range into a checker board and the farmer is in complete possession enjoy ing prosperity. Stock industry on the larger scale has given way to agriculture and dozens of live towns and liamlets dot the section of country which two decades ago was considered wholly unfit for farming. In that comparatively short tpace of time Ritzville has become the metropolis of a splendid county, practi cally in the geographical center of the richest cereal producing district in Eas tern Washington, as well as bearing the distinction of being the greatest primary wheat receiving st...
