For many years, during the dark and bloody times that the settlers in Arizona had to encounter, the tide seemed to he against us. No human foresight was capable of guarding against the disasters that met the people at every step, most of which resulted irom the insecurity of life and property, consequent upon the long continu ed Indian hostilities. We have no disposition to recount the try ing scenes of these long years. Hundreds of brave pioneers lost their lives, victims of the treach erous savage, and other hundreds were discouraged and dishearten ed at the dark and gloomy pro spect before them. It required brave hearts and strong faith, in the ultimate outcome to induce any settlers to remain in the Ter ritory who could possibly get away, But many did remain, and with hope for their sheet-anchor and indomitable perseverance and energy for their motive po...
