Hundreds of tongues circulated this doleful story with celerity and avidity- It was reported also, on the other handf that largo reinforcements had been sent to the garrison during tho progress of the fight, which wan prolonged, till past midnight, from two different directions. It was deemed incredible that Franklin should be allowed to fall so ingloriously when there were large bodies of troops lying idle within two and three Lours march. At preBent nothing is definitely as certained, save the fact that tho rebels must have attacked the plac...

The chief fact, which may b relied upon !h, that the littlo garrison of about 000 urn, were attacked on Thurs day aft moon, by aforce under F fett and SUrnes estimated at from 3,000 to 6,000, the fight commencing at 3 o'clock and continuing till night, the garisnn keeping Ihe rebels at bay. The next morning the assailants renewed the at tack, were repulsed, and driven off, being followed by Federal forces, who kept up continual skirmishing with them. Up to Friday night we had captured 40 prisoners, killed one and woundod three. The garrison sustained no loss. During the contest Forrest practiced a ruse worthy of him, riding up to our pickets waving a flag of truce and calling upon...
