Census job test to be given here The Census Job test will be given at East Los Angeles College at noon on Thursday, March 6, in Eft--109. The 54-question multiplechoice test takes only an hour and qualifies the appliant to work on the Census in their own communities as well as in the East Los Angeles District, explained Mrs. Helen K. Shaw, who is the ELA District’s assistant manager. The ELA District includes all of the unincorporated County area known as East Los Angeles as well as parts of the City of Los Angeles known as El Sereno, Lincoln Heights, Boyle Heights, Highland Park and portions of the Central City. Persons taking the exam who want to work in other communities can have their test papers transferred to their home community, she explained. Roybal announces people mover grant Congressman Edward R. Roybal (D-25th) announced that the City of Los Angeles has received a grant of $1,066,400 from the US. Department of Transportation (DOT) to complete preliminary engineering designs for the Downtown People Mover. The grant supplements nearly $700,000 in initial funds awarded by DOT’S Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) a year ago for engineering and environmental impact studies and reports. Roybal said within fiscal year 1960, the city plans to finish the design of the electric-car system, let out contracts to buy operating hardware, and begin partial construction. 2.17 MILES The People Mover will extend. 2.67 miles from Union Station through the Bunker Hill urban renewal area to the Los Angeles Convention Center. Bills protect homeowners, sellers Assemblyman Art Torres (D-s«th) announced that three Assembly measures he supported which were aimed at protecting homesellers and persons contracting for home Improvements were signed into law by Governor Brown. Assemblyman Torres voted for Assembly Bill 802, which gives homeowners the right to negotiate with a real estate agent the percentage commission the agent will receive when the house is sold. “Most people take it for granted that the real estate agent is entitled to collect a 6 percent commission from the sale of a home. This is not the case, there is no law' wliich fixes the commission at 6 percent. This new law makes it manadatory that beginning on July 1, 1980 real estate agents must inform property owners in writing that commissions are not set by law and can be negotiated,” Assemblyman Torres said. Tax Break available on storm damage Los Angeles County assessor Alexander H. Pope announced that property owners whose property has suffered damage from the recent storms may be eligible for a reduction of their current 1979-80 property taxes under the misfortunecalamity provisions of the law. “The tax savings may be quite small” cautioned the Assessor, “bid eligible taxpayer* will receive refunds on current taxes. "Take the example of a residence on the Roll at its 1975 value of $191,000 of which the Improvement, the house, has a $60,000 value. If tiw bouse suffers damage determined to reduce its value by onethird, the loss would represent $90,000 of Roll value. However, that loss can only be applied, under the law, to the balance of this tax year, or five months.
