FLORIDA "Everglade” Lands-The United States Tropics [Newspaper Article] — Eagle Rock Sentinel — 10 December 1910
FLORIDA "Everglade” Lands-The United States Tropics These lands are the richest and most productive in the world and have the most delightful and healthful all the year climate in the civilized world. Having been at Miami, Florida, for the past month, and having travelled over the overglade lands that are within thirty miles of Miami, studying conditions there, I have been able to gain knowledge of many things, and can now speak of what I have seen and pretty thoroughly investigated and know to be a fact. Let me mention a few that interested me. First some of the negatives; There are no mosquitoes in the everglades, a vast prairie of level, black muck soil approximately eighty by one hundred and twenty miles in extent, and there is no malaria there, no frost. There are very few flies, very few insect pests, and probably as small a percentage of undesirable citizens or poisonous reptiles as in any part of the United States. Let me mention some of the conditions and facts of great val...
STUDY BIRD HABITS Don’t Kill So-Called Destructive Bird* TiU You Know [Newspaper Article] — Eagle Rock Sentinel — 10 December 1910
STUDY BIRD HABITS Don’t Kill So-Called Destructive Bird* TiU You Know At this time of the year when orchards are being fumigated to rid them of scale pests, it seems to me that a few words in regard to the value of .California birds as scale destroyers might make those having trees fumigated more careful in their operations to the end that so many useful birds will noj be killed in the fumigating process. I find that even horticulturists do not appreciate the good done by birds in destroying scale insects, some of them even charging the birds with carrying the scales on their feet and doing no good to off-set the harm. Dr. A. K. Fisher, in charge of Economic Investigation, Washington, D. C., says in regard to birds carrying scales on feet: “It is probably true, as alleged, that birds do carry the young scale insects from place to place. It is also true that the larger insects such as beetles, bees, as well as the land owners themselves, are also distributors of these insects.” Dr. F...
