THURSDAY. JUNE 3, 19^6 B ASTROP COUNTY TIMES SMITHMLLE. TEXAS PAGET Wildcats Take First Game Of Series ELGIN - It seems like every time the Wildcats come out to play lately, the weather and the team both do some spectacular things, and Monday night was no exception. Battling a strong and determined LaGrange nine, the Elgin High School base- ball team held off the Leopards' last-inning challenge and won the first of their three-game series for the regional title. Mean- while, lightning offered the spectators a fine fireworks display and tornadoes threatened in a repeat per- formance of the weather that postponed a bidistrict play against Robinson. Arthur Behrend's pitching was the mainstay of the Wildcats' game. But when Behrend got in trouble in the sixth and seventh inn- ings. it was a fine team play- that saved the game for Elgin. It wasn't until the top of the sixth with Elgin ahead 2-1 that Behrend ran into trouble. With one out. Behrend gave up two hits in a row . The next batt...

4, PAGE 12 BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHV1LLE. TEXAS 78957 THURSDAY. JUNE 3. 1976 A Walk In The Fields Of Life by Martha E. Tuck rbe great thing about Jesus was that he spent more time reading people than he did books. His sermons came out at real life. He saw a shepherd looking for a lost sheep, a merchant buying peacis. a tenant farmer plowing in the field, a lily growing bv the wayside, a sparrow foiling to the earth - and he used these scenes from daily life to show the eternal truths of God. 1 remember once while vacationing in Miami watching thousands of people seeking a good time. One night while walking down one of the brightly lighted streets. 1 passed a Western Union Office. It was deserted except for the clerk and one lady. She had a telegram in her hand and was crying her heart out. In a land of soft moonbeams and sea breezes, hearts can still be broken 1 stood there a few and then walked on but 1 kept thinking about her. Had the lady asked me how to dry her tears, to begi...

p£<se2 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES. SMITHVILLE. TEXAS 78957 Thursday. June 10. 1976 i)ur/ opinions Ho-Hum I Wt H it distressing that so little interest seems to have been generated among Bastrop County citizens in the Paige ISD annexation. Perhaps the county school board's actions are a little like run-off elections, in that they just don't draw mach of a crowd. Bat the citizens of Bastrop County would do well to pay some attention to this one, especially «inw thePlSD had just filed plea in district court, trying to get the chance to hold a referendum to see if they want to join with the Giddings district. / There's been a lot of talk in the last few years of abolish- ing the county board and the county superintendent as outdated and useless pieces of governmental machinery. But perhaps in this case that view needs a little more ana^yfat " • Right now all the uproar is about whether the county board acted legally in annexing the Paige ISD to die Bas- trop ISD. Also, some adults may need a tetanus- diphtheria booster as one is needed every ten years. Rubella (German or 3-day measles) is a common child- hood illness, but it is entirely different from "red mea- sles." The danger of rubella is the damage that it can do to an unborn child if the mother should catch the disease while she is preg- nant. Some common defects caused by rubella are cataracts, heart disease, deafness, blindness, cere- bral palsy and mental retar- dation. In the last major rubella epidemic in 1964 there were 30,000 miscar- riages and stillbirths and another ...

Thursday, June 10. 1976 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 PAGE 5 Leopards Take Regional Over Cats ELGIN -- Despite a valiant attempt to follow up their first game win, the Elgin Wildcats failed to withstand the power pitching and hit- ting of the LaGange Leo- pards and lost the Region V series by dropping two games straight Thursday, June 13, in LaGrange. Lack of depth told the tale for the Wildcats, as the heat and an aching right forced first string pitcher Arthur Behrend, having taking over mound duties from Ernest Sanchez in the second inn- ing, to leave the first game in the. sixth. Behrend's ab- sence from the mound seemed to take the wind out of the Wildcats' sails, and Elgin's game suffered from then on. The Wildcats' key moment came in the first game, the top of sixth, when John Selvera's homer put them on the scoreboard for the first time. With LaGrange ahead 2-1, the Wildcats fired up. Elgin had two outs and a man on first and third when Behrend on first b...

TEXAS 78957 Thursday, Jane 10,1976 Coupland Festival Puts Town On MKT Map Probably not since 1921, when a bull belonging to Arnold Muery, Sr. was hit in downtown Coupland by a Katy train, has this rural community been as excited as it was this past Sunday. "A community in the blacklands," as Coupland, Texas, labels itself, has ceremoniously placed itself back on the Katy Railroad map. Last Sunday, Coup- land achieved this goal with the formal dedication of the restoration of the Old Katy Depot in downtown Coup- land. Pfluger commented that he saw many friends, that he had not seen in at least thirty years.
