The minister called to say that tho "store" was selling .its bread a penny cheaper, and as he must buy in tho cheapest market, he would close liia account with him. Not to be outdone, tho baker sent • on Saturday night, while the church was being cleaned, to have his cusli-. ions and books removed, and also procured two of Spurgeon'a sermons for twopence. On Monday morning the minister called on the baker and said .: "Good morning, Mr. S . Is any thing wrong, anybody ill, any mis fortune befallen you, or what?" * ' "Naething that I ken o\" answer ed the baker, placidly. "We're a* wcel eneuch." "Oh, I am so glad to hear that," said tho minister, with a gasp ; "but you arc such a regular attender at church, and, as the pew waB quite empty at both services yesterday, I was afraid, so T called to seo you.-' "Oh, that's naething," remarked ...

The Making of Lanoline. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 8 August 1919

The Making of Lanoline. j The Australian Minister for Cub* toms recently callcd attention to tho waste of millions of pounds ol lano lino from tho numerous wool scour ing establishments in the Common wealth. Tho subject had previously been dealt with by Mr. J. Drownleo .Henderson, Government Analyst o! Queensland, who pointed out that lanolino existed in wool to tho cx-, tent of 14 per cent. Tho German wholesale price for lanolino at that time—not the mixture of lunolino, vaseline and water sold in collapsi ble tubes—wus lid. per pound, so that from this source a very largo quantity of material must have been thrown uway in Australian wool atoms. "Personally," said Mr. Hen derson, "I think thero is certainly a fair margin of profit showing hero. It is not at all likely that a process which is worked successfully and well known in Germany would cost a great deal more to - work hero with such a store of raw material to tmnri." BUSY TIME AT LOCAL STATION. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Stock Journal — 8 August 1919

BUSY TIME AT LOCAL ft'rATrn\T The officials aud transhipping agents are having a busy time at • the Tocumval station at present, numerous special trains running daily. A special gang of men has be^u sent from Sydney to> handle the coal coming through- for the South Australian Railways and Adelaide Ga~> Company, but at times agents could employ a larger number of mei to facilitate tran shipment. What amuses local resi dents is Mr Normau's dictum that . coal cannot be handled at Tocumwal for Victorian supplies, yet here they are busy in the iute.eils of South Australia! We will admit the work is greatly hampered through the crass stupidity of tlis powers that be refusing to make accomodation for h indlmg the in creasing inter-state traffic, and also by the N.S.W. Commissioners' lack of initiative in coming to some: suitable arrangement for utilising the third-rail test line iu the' yards.. t It is said a thousand tous of co il or: more a day could be handled 011 this half-mile o...
