Odds and Ends. "Oh! mother," said a little fellow, "I. have, got such a bad. headache and sore throat, too,.that I don't believe I can go to school'to-day." " Have you, my dear?" asked the mother ;- "well you. shall stay at home, and take some medicine." "It's. no matter," retorted the shrewd urchin ; " I guess I can go to school; I've got e'm,, but tliey don't hurt me!" Why is a modern belle like a busj-bo- dy? Because she is never happy but when in a bustle.. " What carrot-headed, ugly little urchin is that madam ?. do you know his name?" "Why, yes: that is my youngest son!" " You don't say so, indeed ! Why, what a dear little sweet.dove-eyed cherub he is, to be sure !" "I'll jump at that conclusion," as the flea said, when the man made up his mind to catch it.

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. "Vox populi, vox Dei." FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 1849. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 22 June 1849

THE INDEPENDENT JOURNAL. " Vox jpopuli, vox Dei." A COPT of the Report of the Committee appointed to consider the Land Regula* tions, has been transmitted to us by the Local Government for publication, and will accordingly be found in another co- lumn of our journal. We find the Committee have inserted a qualification of the regulations they at first proposed to apply to the lands classed un- der letter A, which were protested against so strongly by a late member of their body, the lamented GEOEGE LEAKE, ESQ., and which .was, at the time, published by us. We presume the qualification we speak of, was the fruit of that protest so ably drawn up, and which, if we are rightly informed, moved the members of the Committee to read Lord Grey's dispatch which was the cause of their Deing appointed to consider the subject, and which, until after that protest was published, they had not even considered worth their while to consult ! contenting themselves merely with the perusal of the New Sout...

Mauritius. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 29 June 1849

Mauritius. By the arrival of the Waterlilly from Port Louis, wo have received Mauritian iutelligence to the middle of May. "We re- gret to report that affairs in that colony still appear to be in a very bad state ; the planters have been unable to pay one pen- ny of their labourers' wages for the last six months! and the government had found it absolutely necessary to suspend the ope- ration of the law by which they could bo sued for payment. In the meantime the planters, on account of their want of means to purchase the usual kind of food for the labourers, were also authorised to feed them on maize and the produce of the wild manioc, a species of tapioca, growing on their own grounds. This melancholy state of affairs would continue until the new crop of sugar came into the market, which was expected to realise a much better price than had lately ruled, indeed an amend- ment in this particular took place a day or two before the sailing of the Waterlilly. To add to their distress, i...

India. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 29 June 1849

Indian ? Byway of Mauritius we have intelligence from the East Indies to late in April, the news however having only arrived the day preceding the sailing of the Waterlilly, it had not been published in the local journals, and we are consequently unable to give details. We are gratified in being able to report with cofindence, that Lord Gough, who has been recalled from the chief command owing, it is stated, to dis- satisfaction on the part of the home go verment, with his conduct of the war, had, previous to receiving his recall, succeeded in completely subduing the insurgents, so that his successor, Sir. W. Gomm, will find but little to do otherwise than to tranquilise the disturbed districts.
