Moving Along a Vigilance Committee. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 16 June 1900

Moving Along a Vigilance Committee. After, a prolonged spell, Newcastle Vigilance Committee met once again on'Thuraday of last week. Dr. Doyle was present, and Mr. J. Wilson appeared with credentials from one section of the Harbors and Rivers Employees. Stevens and Hol land were, needless to Bay, amongst those present. In reply to questions of Dr. Doyle, it was elicited that the Committee ^ was paying f°r fche cleaning of the wharves ; and that the Railway Commissioners, the Harbors and Ri Department, and the Hunter River Co., all denied responsibility in the matter. Hnlland insisted that owners should be compelled to pay for the cleansing of their premises, and drew attention to the fact that the two men engaged 011 the wharf by the committee had removed a huge pile of mildewed bags that were almost smouldering — from under the Hunter River Co.'s shed. Undnr these bags there was an accu mulated mass of filth — and he held that whosoever was responsible should be prosecuted. A lung ...

ECONOMIC POSITION OF WOMAN. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 16 June 1900

EeONGMie POSITION OF WOMAN. (Br T. D Benson.) It is in these two movements towards a complex communism and towards an individual freedom, that tbe hope of our future civilisation rests Communal pro duction means individual freedom, i and the race stands to gain much by transferring all work f-otn the sacred precincts of home to com munal work (hops ; and the one who stands to gain most from the change is woman, whether as maid, wife. 0 mother. Home will we no less sacred if it cease to be reminiscent of ' The Song of the .Shirt ' for our womankind, nor be less attractive to mankind if it cease to be redolent of the fumeB of cooking, and the children will benefit if the parents, especially tie mothei, gain time to make their acquaintance. The present evolutionary movements in society are making fast for woman's econ omic freedom, and we must re member that evolution is creation, and its objective the creation of man and woman. POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC No Difficulty. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 16 June 1900

POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC j No Difficulty. Mr. Hays Hammond (he who smuggled rifles into Idaho in '92 and into th« Transvaal in '96) has been telling his . capitalistic masters how to cheapen production in the Tran vaal when the war U over : — ' Thee are,' Haid Mr.' | Hammond, ' in South Africa ! millions of kam--s, and it d es ' seem p eposteroua that we are not ab e to obtain 70,000 o-- 80, 000 kaifirs to work upon the mines. . . W ith good govern j merit there shonid be an abun | dance of labor, and with an abun dance of labor there will be no difficulty iD cutting down wages, liecaus ? it is preposterous to pay a kaffir the present wages. He would be quite as well satisfied — in fact, he would work longer — if you gave him half the amonnt, (Laughter.) His wages are a together disproportionate to his requirements . THE BRUNCHES. NEWCASTLE. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 16 June 1900

THE BRANCHES. NEWCASTLE.' Disappointments are not alone con* fined to tbe love-sick twain, but are even shared by the enthusiastic and zealous Socialist, and, like the course of true love, his path runs not too smoothly. But he differs somewhat in his disappointed feelings to the love-sick swain, who — from the novel viewpoint — breaks his heart, and then hies himself away to some wooded forest and — hangs h-ms*lf. When dis appointed the zealous Socialist relieves his feelings by a few smothered— sometimes unsmothered — impreca tions, and proceeds — not to hang him self — to make it particularly ' warm !I for the one responsible for his disap pointment. In connection with the foregoing, the secretary of thia branch managed to run 'foul' of three or four of the most enthusiastic spirits of this section, and upon him has been hurled the full force of their smothered imprecations and unrighteous indigna tion, and over his (the sec.'s) head there hangs the threat of 'dismissal in stanta...

The Stock Exchange War. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 16 June 1900

The Stock Exchange War: It may help our readers to appreciate the insatiable greed of the South African capitalists if 1 he_v will digest the following figures representing the dividends paid by the principal go'd- mining companies of 1898. In most cases there is a falling off in the divi dends for 1899 owing to the cessation of working during the last thre^ months of the year, so we give the dividends for 1898 to t-how what profits are made in a fall year. The Coming Years. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 16 June 1900

The Coming Years. (For Thb People.) In grim despair the wide world o'er, From farthest east to west, The toiler in the centuries gone Saw little hope of rest ; But o'er the dawning, coming years, Like sunrise o'er the sea, There surely gleams a star of hops That speaks of liberty. Not liberty to daily toil In all but name a slave : j Nor liberty to struggle on From cradle to the grave ; But liberty of grander breadth Than ever known before, So broad it taketh in the world From farthest Bea to shore. Then ' I'he world for the world's workers ' Shall hence our motto be, Till all monopolies shall feel How strong the unity ; While names like Morris, Marx and Bax Shall highest honors gain, And fame won on the battle-field In this new light shall wane. And down the century nigh at hand Our children's Bongs shall ring How 'Peace on 'Earth was only brought When Labor was crowned king. And how salvation truly cams By work and work alone ; How toilers built the edifice Where Marx had placed t...

AT HEADQUARTERS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 16 June 1900

AT HEADQUARTERS. Owing to the change of Secretary to the Central Brunch Inst. woi?k, t.he advertising of last .Sundny night's lecture was unfortunately overlooked, consequently Mrs. Martel took it for granted that no arrangement had been made and therefore did not ap pear. Despite the rain there was a good audience present. Comrade Moroney was once more called upon to fill the breach. He spoke on the rampant jingoism which was at the present affecting the people. The dangers ahead of Australian Democracy under its influence in connection with Federation, Trusts and their deve lopement, and Socialists' attitude to wards them, were touched upon. An interesting discussion followed which filled in the evening to the evident satisfaction of the audience. Mrs. Martel will, without fail, de liver her lecture to-morrow (Sunday) night on ' Ruskin.' Those who want to hear an interesting lecture should attend. Economic class to-night (Saturday). Subject : ' Value, Price, and Profit,' by Marx. ...

NUTS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 16 June 1900

NUTS. Never before in Australian Histor/ was the need bo strong for a vigorous, intelligent and militant party of the workers to fight not only for economic eman cipation, hut to preserve the po litical liberties we now posses'. Australia is being shamelessly bo | trayed and sold to the plutes who I at present demand the empire, and j only one party, one movement, . stand* clear and indepen j dent in fighting back the reaction ary forces. That movement is the Socialist Labor Party. The Revs. Rentoul and But'er spoke bravely in Melbourne last week in proteiting against the discharge of men from Fitzgibboa's sewer department, owing to thpi disloyalty in refusing- to shriek jingo hoots with the mad mob, also for th--ir denunciation of the war as a capitalist one and the most criminal enterprise British ty rants have vet perpetrated.
