PUBLIC SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION. The first annual report of the Clarence River Public Schools Amateur Athletic As sociation, adopted on August 6, shows that a successful year was experienced by the Society. The members' roll shows a total of 73 ladies and gentlemen, and the balance sheet announces an actual credit balance of £37 0s. 2d. The total income was £103 19s. 7d. The initial meeting on 2Gth November, 1897, was a great success. Over 700 entries were received for the various athletic events. The, physical, drill ^competitions were a dis tinctly attractive 'feature of the programme, several schools competing. This Association does good work in bringing together teachers and pupils from different centres, nnd creates a healthy interest in public school life.

BELLINGEN LAND BOARD.   The Local Land Board held a three days sitting at Bellingen last week, August 11, 12, and 13. Mr. A. J. Park (chairman), Mr. P. E. Cheers and Mr. F. T. Matthews, presided. Messrs. Deverell and Wilshire (c.p. inspectors) were present during part of the sittings, mid Mr. H. Breakell filled his old post as clerk. The following cases were dealt with : —   George Robert Rowe. — An applica tion for 47 acres o.c.p., and 138 acres c.l. was confirmed. Matthew Kelly. — This was an appli cation for an o.c.l. of 40 acres, and a c.l. of 120 acres, but as the applicant did not appear, it was discharged from the list, and will come on again at next meeting. DOCTOR FOR THE BELLINGER. The public meeting in Bellingen School of Arts on Saturday afternoon, to arrange for retaining Dr. W. A. Kelly's services in the district, was attended by about 30 gentlemen, representing all parts of the river. Mr. F. T. Matthews, who presided, explained that Dr. Kelly had agreed to take up his residence here if sufficient inducement were offered him.
