Stanley Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Wellington Times and Agricultural and Mining Gazette — 4 February 1891

Stanley Notes.         (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT) A meeting was held in the Public Hall last night, to receive the report of the Stanley Library and Reading Room, and to appoint a managing committee for the current year. When this literary institution was first established there was no other of the kind in any country district in Tasmania. Thirty eight years ago Circular Head, as regards regular communication, was further off from Launceston than it is now from London, for it was no unusual thing to be two months without a mail. The people, thus thrown upon their own resources, conceived the idea of a public library and reading room. In modern times the first thing under such cir- cumstances would have been to apply to the Government for a grant in aid. The people did not do this, but trusted to their energy and resources. They were content to begin at the beginning, to take every step of the ladder as it came, and did not risk a...
