MANSFIELD SHIRE COUNCIL. This body met on Wednesday last at the Shire Hall, at 2 o'clock-present, Dr. Rowe (President), and Crs. Kitchen, ,Chenery, Cotter, Baldry, and Tomkins. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Council proceeded to open tenders for making 10 chains of a side road in Chenery street. The fol owing persons tendered-viz., Mr. Motherwel, £22 10s.; R. Collopy, £25 ; J. Barley, £27, and Mr. Bagley £12. The tender of Mr. Bagley was accepted. A tender from Mr. A. Motherwell for a shed and watercloset to be erected in the shire hall ground was read amounting to £117. The tender was considered too high, and on the motion of Cr. Kitchen it was determined to call for fresh tenders. Monday, July. 4 (Before Messrs Heath and Sharpe) John Tudge was charged with stealing a merchaum pipe belonging to Mr B Brown from the parlour at the Royal Hotel. Mr Brown, left his pipe on the shelf while he went to get his dinner, and returned in about half an hour,. when thoe pipe was gone, There had been several cattlemen in the house, and presuming thinking it belonged to one of them took it and left. Mr Brown informed Sergeant Whelan of his loss, and the officer went at once to the Star Hotel, and found prisoner in the bar. Directly prisoner saw Mr Brown he knew what was the matter and said he only took the pipe to take care of it.
