Farming Notes. MEASURING HAY IN THE STACK. [Newspaper Article] — The Canowindra Star — 30 November 1900

Farming Hotes. MEASURING JIAy INr THE STACK. Here are a 'few simple rules for deter-: Jjnining the amount of hay in a stack or mow, when it is not convenient to weigh it (says the American ' Cultivator).' Selling by measurements is not always 'the most satisfactory method, but it -is ? Bometimes tho most convenient. Sellers are 'disposed to insist that a cube ol '7ft is a ton. This is entirely too small, and trill ndt- weigh out. How many cubic feet ' will 'make a ton depends on bo many 'conditions that -no 'certain rule cm be ; .given. It depends on the 'kind df hay?,' 'on the character of the hay, whether fine or coarse ; on the condition in -which it ?was put in the stack, :the length -of time ;it has -been -there, and particularly on ^t'ne sue, especially the depth of^fhe stack ? or mow. In a very -la^ge mow, well ? settled, 100 cubic:fe6t of lucerne or grass iwy ni«y«verage a ton, but on top of the 'mow or in a small stack it requires 500 to; ?51 2 cubic feet, sometimes even mo...
