BREEDING TERRAPIN AND FREEZING FISH. [Newspaper Article] — The Riverine Grazier — 23 December 1874

BREEDING TERRAPIN AND FREEZ ING FISH. An establishment has lately been started near this city (New York) for the purpose of supplying to our markets an abundance of that greatest of marine delicacies, the terra pin, the artificial breeding of which is 'an en tirely novel idea, and, from' the success thus far encountered, appears to be a very suc cesful one. The animals arc caught at various points along our Southern sea coast and shipped directly to a fish dealer at Pleasure Bay, . near Long Branch, N.J. Here tlioy are placed in a huge pen, built on the beach. About two-thirds of the cucIot sure ' is under water and the bottom is sloping so as to leave a depth of some eight feet in the deepest -part. As many as 10,000 terrapin are placed in this receptacle at a time. For some years past the pro prietor has noticed that large numbers of eggs were laid .on ! the i submerged: sand; ;b'ut ithat very few were successfully hatched, as one terrapin would quickly destroy and de vour the egg...

.. \ ; SYDiNEY. ' '(from our own correspondent.} . . December 18, 1874. : Thc events or the general election continue to awaken ?a lively Interest in the metropolis. On Thursday (10th) as I think I mentioned, the Minister for Lands was re jected at I'arramatta, ii\ consequence' of the bitter con tention between tf\o p^rtisaqs ctf the other two candi dates, Mr Hugh Taylpr and Mr Byrnes. The season of the year at which we have ar rived brings before our minds the remem brance of Him whoso advent to our world was to proclaim 'peace on earth and good will' to men,' and should -lead us to 'cultivate friendly feelings to all of our'racci.' At a time when families come together, to rejoice in their blessings, and enjoy for a while the hospitality which the parental board presents ! to all who meet beneath the paternal roof; it is our duty to cultivate a spirit of kindnoss to both friend and foe. Let us try to forget the points on which we differ, and remember only those on which wo agree, and we will thus best show that we appreciate the rights and blessings secured to us by the Prince of Peace. To rejoice as Christians is our blessed privilege, but wo can only truly do so wlie?} Yfe have cast into bblivfon oyery , senti ment of unkindness or hatred towards any of the human family which may have been nursed in our hearts, and by this means w'c shall best enjoy the happy ...

% IPtejr ^bristnras ! The elections arc proceeding with vigour and the new Parliament will soon bo known; There are likely to be some important changes. in the members, though' we believe the Ministry will have a good working ma jority. In reading, the. addresses and speccjies of the several candidates, we are at a loss tq know what was the rise of this appeal to the country, I here lias been -no question- of public ' policy announced, and constituencies have no point to determine by their votes but thoir respect or otherwiso -for for those wlio ..are seeking their suffrages, We cannot but regard! this general, election as .a most impolitic..' movement.
