Latest Intelligence. MELBOURNE, Monday Evening. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 20 June 1882

Latest Intelligence. [BY ELECTIIC TELEGRAPIIH (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) MELBOURNE, Monday Evening. The political situation is still un settled, but negotiations for a compro mise have been carried on all day, although no understanding has yet been arrived at. The Government urge that if Francis' motion is a friendly one hI can have no objection to withdraw it on the understanding that the Government give way as to the remissions in com mittee of ways and means. This pro posal, however, is hardly likely to be accepted by Mr. Francis, who will re quire, before assenting to withdraw his motion, that the Government shall alto getller refrain from proposing the remis sions. O'Shnnussy, who had been absent whlile these proceedings were going on, feels annoyed at Francis having acted in his (Sir John's) absence, and if discussion occurs on the matter in the Assembly to-morrow, he will essay to show that Francis' motion is out of order and without precedent. This, however, is not seriou...

THE POLITICAL SITUATION. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 20 June 1882

TIlE POLITICAL SITUATION. Yesterday's Age says that the politi cal situation has had the attention of the Government since Thursday last, and the decision on the part of the Premier to accept the motion of Mr. Francis as a vote of want of confidence has been confirmed. The motion will take pre cedence of all other business on Tues day next, when Sir Bryan O'Loghleu will reply. The leading men on the Government side, assisted by several members on the Opposition benches, have been endeavoring to effect a recon ciliation during the last few days, but the attitude assumed by the Govern ment has prevented any arrangement being made, so that matters remain in exactly the same poiition as when the flouse adjourned on Thursday. The Government are of opinion that when a deivision takes place on the motion they will have a majority, but it is admitted that the situation is full of peril. Thl latest move of the Ministry is statedto consist in an endeavor to save the sink ing ship by means of ...

OUR SWAN REACH LETTER. Saturday, June 17. [Newspaper Article] — Bairnsdale Advertiser and Tambo and Omeo Chronicle — 20 June 1882

OUR~ SWAN REACHCI LIYrfl1lt (FRoM OUR OWNM collulEaionlEnr.) Saturdaiy, Junle 17. The ruaual conveniunt thenui, the weather, comes before my mind to begin with. The frequent and severe frosts lately experienced here have not been surpassed in the remembrance of the traditional oldest inhabitant on the Tambo; at ant rate, they retard the growth of grass very much, and stock feel the cold severely. Preparations for the next crops are going on apace. I think a considerable quantity of new land will be put under crop this season, the returns from the last having been generally satisfactory. Capitalists and land speculators are fully alive to the advantages of land on the Tambo Valley. I heard that £6 10s an acre has been offered and declined for a large block somewhere betwseen Swan PIeach aln DMossyface, besides nffars for various other properties near to the above figures, and even more for -small properties. Altogether owners of property on the Tambo hare good reason to be hopeful of...

The Advertiser. PUBLISHED EVERY TUESDAY, THURSDAY AND SATURDAY ?dnNRING. Bairnsdaae. Tuesday,.. June 20, ;1882 THE present session of Parliament, will, we should inngine, be inl t?he future historically referred to as " the session of want .of :confidence motions." No sooner is one of these bugbears to the pence of mind of a Ministry adroitly cleared out of the lroad than another appears in its placeb; and thus' month after month' of tioe country's time-is frittered away in unseemly ..scrambles for the occlpation of the Treasury Benches. It appears ridiculous, in the first place, tlat an Administration with out -friends and without a party should have, -by a successful coup, pirated the envied situation, while. thd two parties, who had been contesting tilhe position with each other with such bitter strife, were making their prepar ations for an attacko and a defence. Sir Bryan O'Loghlen, with a wililess for which he imust lie credited, stepped in betweein tlihese opposing factions, ...
