MINING. MAYTOWN. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 9 December 1897

MINING. MAYTOWN. The Lord Nelson reef taken up by Mr John. Clunn, has recently been visited by him and Mr Harris, a min- ing expert : from New. South Wales. They traced the reef through a great portion of the 18 acre lease, finding it to average between two to three feet in thickness, and by dollying proved it to contain from payable to rich gold. One Louis, a Frenchman, informs us that so years ago he and a mate dollied 150 ozs of gold from this reef, which was afterwards taken up by Morgan and part)-, who purchased machinery for its ' development, but owing to a dispute among the share- holders, the destination of the mach- iner)* was altered lo the Hodgkinson, and the reef has since remained idle until Mr Clunn fortunately took it up. The reef is situated between Byers- town and Maytown, a-district brist- ling with quartz and reef indications, which have never been prospected and are well worth the attention of capital- ists and investors.. Mr Clunn has shown us some specimens of...

Primitive Methodist Church. SALE OF WORK AND MARKET FAIR. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 9 December 1897

Primitive Methodist Church. SALE OF WORK AND MARKET FAIR. Tlie Primitive Methodist sale of work and market fair held in the Gordon Rall on the 2nd and 3rd of December, was in every sense of the term a most unqualified success, far exceeding the expectations of its most sanguino promoters. Tho sale was opened by Mr. A. J. Draper (Mayor), who expressed his pleasure nt being pre- sent to open the fair, and congratulated the ladies oti the excellent quality of their work. The sile vieVed as a whole, speaks volumes for the committee cf ladies, who left no stone unturned to bring their undertaking to a successful termination. That they accomplished their purposes is evident from thu'" most satisfactory financial returns of the sale. The refresh- ment still was under tho management of Mrs. Robertson, who was ably assisted by the Misses Montgomery and Foggon. That Mis. Robertson did her work well goes without saying. The ice-cream was made and given by Mr. C. Richards, and that the good thi...

C. B. T. Tarneri Bowling. The bowling of C. T. B. Turner and J. J. F«iria of New South Wales in the late ci,Utics will be recollected as extraordinary successful. Turner's figures will probably never be approached again. One is apt to forget the wonderful merit of his work after a lapse of ten year« ; certain it is that those do so who pass him by in summing up Spot forth as incomparably the finest trundler the world lias produced. BRIEFS. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 9 December 1897

BRIEFS. : A nice little present to take home. A shilling box of Cadbury's Chocolate creams at Craig's. Big value. William says he won't do as he has been advised, and plant a lot of shade frees in front of the hotel: ; ?'r',; ? Says he doesn't want the new ven ! ture referred to as " the shadiest pub iii town." The youngsters in the old country are having a high old time hanging on behind the new motor cars. - You see-the new invention doesn't require \ whip. What is the difference between a British soldier and the British work- man of to-day ? One strikes for his country, and the other strikes for the benefit of foreign countries. If a certain Cairns baker who is noted for asking the people to " only I give him a trial " got his dues, he'd quickly get a trial for selling short weight bread. : And after the trial he should enjoy a fine time. - T10"morrow to-day will be yesterday. Mulgrave Letter. [FROM "OUR OWN."] [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 9 December 1897

Mulgrave Letter. [FKbK-3"Oüh''QwXrJ '. ' ' ' We have, at last had a visit from Jupiter Pluvius, and it is needless to say that he was welcome. Had the rain delayed its appearance- the cane would have suffered greatly as the leaves were already turning yellow, and in some places the young ratoons were attacked by a new sort of grass- hopper, who stripped the ribbon of the leaves and left the rest standing like cassowary wings. However, I think these late heavy showers will kill them or at least check their progress." The farmers life is always an uneasy one, there is always something to bother him. After the rain we will have warm weather, and then the weeds will grow, and-all-hands must set to work chipping. ;^Chipping is Very hot work and, there isnot much fun standing ini a stooping attitude; all day in the sun: . \ ?' The Mulgrave jockey club race meeting was a success. They were, I believe, £39 in debt1 before the last meeting, and now they stand with a debit balance of only ¿"9...

The Cow-Pea.-An Offer to Farmer», A valued correspondent at Mackay writes in terms of praise to the " Tropiculturist " respecting the' article in their last issue on the "Merits of (he Cow-Pea^ He concludes his letter as follows :-" I will be prepared to make, an agreement with any farmer to purchase not less than 150 bushels of seed, bagged, - sound, and in good, .condition delivered free on board at Brisbane between the loth and 31st August next, for which I will pay .not four shillings [as we quoted as a probable price], but six shillings per bushel of sixty pDunds. If necessary, I-feel sure I could readily obtain of a like nature from nany of my neighbour^" We have still to report that the seed ts still unobtainable in Brisbane, which is a great pity, as it will soon be too late to sow for Best season'* cane pUntiag. Mr Valder, now of. the Hawkes- bury college, lately estimated ' the yield of seed at from jo to 40 bushels ; per acre. Be- fore going to press we have learned (writ...

Hot Water from the Lamp Posts. [Newspaper Article] — Morning Post — 9 December 1897

Hot Water from the Lamp Potts. In the past not a few of our inventors, en- gineers,- and speculators had quite grasped the fact that the heat generated by lamps was woefully wasted : but the obvious ad- vantage of illumination made the disadvan- tage of waste buta secondary thought, and though the idea of supplying hot water in our streets had often been mooted, thc primary fact stood out that it would not " pay.'' Heretofore it has always been con- sidered necessary to apply the heat from below. It has only now been proved, by the demonstration at the Crystal Palace, London, that steam can be worked in a downward as well as in an upward direction. " The prob- lem bas been solved'by thc introduction of powerful valves, strong enough for a steam engine, let, alone a lampost. . Outwardly the Ump to be used for the purpose ;ot supplying hot water will add materially to thc decora- tion of our streets. The post itself, shaped like a Corinthian pillar, rises from a pedesti.il forming a no...
