N.S.W. STATE BRICKWORKS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 11 May 1914

Nf.SW -.STATE' R-RTrKWORKS. The latest about the State brickworks with which Minister Griffith was going to break 'the brick ring,' is that they have been closed down in definitely. Nobody knows why, beyond some talk about 'extensive alterations,' and. of course, the strike. Fortunately nobody seems to care. The opportunity is an excellent one for the Minister closing down a bankrupt institution, and spending the saving in his own electorate if needs be. MASTER PAINTERS. . Architects, Builders & Engineers. ARCHITECTS AND THEIR CRITICS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 11 May 1914

Architects, Builders &: Engineers. ARCHITECTS AND THEIR CRITICS. At the last meeting of the N.S.W. Institute of Architects, Mr. Allen related that, in connection with certain plans he had tendered to a certain council, the clerk had mentioned that 'he thought they were all right.' Mr. H. E. Ross, at the same meeting', referred to the overhauling of architects' plans by '£o-a-vveek inspectors.' The argument at the part of the discussion when those remarks were made was for the administration of the pro posed new Building Act by a competent authority, or authorities. In view of these references the fol lowing excerpt from the 'Weekly Despatch,' in regard to a recent meeting of Kuring-gai Council, may prove interesting: — The President reported that to obviate unneces sary duplication of work and consequent delay, he had to recommend that Mr. Ward, the sanitary inspector, be appointed building* inspector. Mr. Ward had to view the plans and sites. as sanitary inspector, and it w...

KURING-GAI AND WARRINGAH. Enterprise and Retrogression. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 11 May 1914

KURING-GAI AND W, ARRINGAH. '' Enterprise and Retrogression. As. a contrast in enterprise and retrogression, the policies of Kuring-gai and Warringah Councils (N.S.W.) stand out from the ordinary incidents of local government affairs, and provide a moral for slow-moving, if not stationary, administrations. Up till recently the services of L.G. Engineer Alan Price, A.M.I.C.E., were shared by the two councils, when Kuring-gai enterprisingly engaged him solely at a salary of £400 per annum. The old fallacy, that administrative expenses represent dead money, however, hq'lds .w.ith Warringahr wjiich^lia^ since advertised ' for 'an engineer' at £200 per annum. How competent services are to be secured is a mystery, perhaps known to the council— but that remains to be proved. At any rate, should any qualified officer accept at the £200-figure, it will only be until something better offers— a sort of drinks-and-sundries fill-gap. As a matter of fact, Warringah, with its seaside possibilities...
