Local Sports THE PATRIOTIC FUND SHOULD BENEFIT. [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh and Caulfield Times Mulgrave and Ferntree Gully Guardian — 12 December 1914

Local Sports THiE PATRIOTrc FUN:;D SHOULD BgEirET. Oakleigh has. in common with other places of lesser note, its local sports-men who by reason of Stheir venturous spirit and charac teristics have mude themselves 1 names that will endure when those of more prosaic ' individuals are f forgotten. The first we will call Jack, and we cannot better des cribe him than as one who, as a close observer, is able to give in graphic language and in a nutshell all local happenings, garnished with homely and telling illustra tions, which stick in one's mind as tenaceously as a newly-pasted bill on a hoarding. Bill, on the other hand, does not aspire to these ac complishments, and amid many temptations to embark in new en terprises "sticks to his' last," as the old saying is. But there is one thing wherein they resemble one another-they are both excellent judges of horseflesh and possess ponies that must have a rare strain of Arabian blood in them. It is a moot question which can travel the fastes...

The War. PATRIOTIC CONCERT. O Thursday e;-eni : a concert w1,a:s gii.en in thv Mechani*cs' Hal, Cak'ei h, in aid of: the Belgiani 2-ii Fundr . TIe attendance was not as large as could be desired, but when it is considered that it was got up in less than a week the success attained was satisfactory; another week would have ensured a full house. The Mayor Cr Andrew) pre sided, and in opening said the concert had been arranged by Mrs Anderson, of Broadway, who had defrayed all the expenses, so that the whole of the proceeds would go to the Belgian Relief Fund. The program was varied and interesting-one of the best ever submitted to a local audience-and its merit may be gauged by the fact that almost every number was encored. Amongst the vocalists Madam Evelyn Ashley, one of Melbourne's foremost and favorite sopranos, was pre-eminent; the public of Oakleigh hear far too seldom her charming and refined vocalisation, and we hope to hear her shortly again. The selections rendered by the pu...
