EFFETE JOURNALISM. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 29 October 1887

EFFlI'E JOURIINAIISM,. "Art est m:rimse celare artem :' 'uin perfection of newspaper art is in the concealment of that art. So think soue of our compeers, if the blending into one inharmnoious whole sary be styled an art. If so, it is peculiar to some papers. that have been called into existence to establish a long-felt want &c. There is no doubt in some of these districts in which these vapid nurstlings circulhte there is indeed siv'ery long-felt want TO GoET nil OF TIEr,. We have no desire to act a dog-in.the-manger part to deter any proprietor, who may think he has a fair field, and can pro duce a readable journal fromi entering the arena, as a proper and efficient rep resentatirve of district interests, We cannot say asi much for some of the al ready established so called representatives of public olinion amongst the nine journals, we referred to our last issue, within a distance of about 40 miles. "E nihilo nihil.fit " will apuly to these journals, and as they have no i...

OUR COLUMNS. [Newspaper Article] — Morwell Advertiser and Weekly Chronicle — 29 October 1887

OUR COLU.?SI. -o We can cordially cudorse the opinions of the agricultural contributor to the Advocate, when he states :-" People grumble about Melbourne interests being unfairly bolstered up at the hands of the Governmenit, the said hianis for that puripose being dipped into the general revenue bag. After giving vent to their feelings in that line, these same grumnblers will forthwith pay their sub scriptions to a MeIlbourne paper." )Of course this must be considerably in creased by the action of country papers whose jissues of supplements, &e.. " bolstering up" Melbourne interests has this effect. When one sees such coii menits in a country paper guilty of per petrating this abuse, the thought arises it is very like the devil reproving sin. Foir our part, we reckon to havo our columiins our own, that we may advocate district interests free from Metropolitan inufluelces,

(TO Till EDnITOR MORIL'WELL ADVIELTISLt.) Sin,-Like Non-Smoker, I also feel it my duty to reply, etc., but it is to rebut Non-Sloker's statements that the spirit moveth me. It seems a great pity that the HIazelwood Society's dis cussion tn the noxious weed has been dragged before the public, and whatever may be its outcome, for weal or woe, must be credited or debited to the gen tleman who communicated the report of that meeting to your columns. Tlhe controversy will not be entirel- profit less if it serves to teach that.gentlemana that when--ln leg to stand on-argu uents are advanced in his support. that he will favor tle public with the argu inents, and allow them to be the judges, i instead of rashly and illogically drawing his own conclusions, which were as tlie poles from correctness, for I feel sure that out of a large meeting he t intls alone, in re-no leg to stand on--con clusions ; and, if lie doubts this, I challenge him to take a vote on tlhe mlatter at the next meeting, ...

This still remains in a most unsatisfactory state, and the sonner steps are taken to put matters right, the better it will he. As previously mentioned, the hall is encum hered with a debt of L265, and this must he wiped Tft before there will be anry healthy vitality in its imnageiment, which is at present in the hands of an irresponsible committee. Surely some interest many be awakened, so that thel business of the Insttitutioi may be roused froin its present inmnition. It is certainly time that something be done, and e will be glad to hear of the in itiative being taken to have the lMorwell Mechanics'linstitute and- Free Iibrary placed ioi a footing that Will enable it-to discharge efficiently the functions for which it w"ia est:ilslished.
