THE CUSTOM OF THE GOY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 February 1898

THE CUSTOM OF THE G O Y. By Rabbi L. Weiss in the Hebrew Standard. The injunction not to imitate the manners of the non-Jews comes down to us as a tradition from time immemorial ; from sire to son, and from generations to posterity, it was given over to loud acclaim as God had given it to Israel through Moses in the words — ' But it is strange how scholars fall into the error of claiming here an everlasting statute, while, in fact, it refers strictly to those Oanaan Ites described in Leviticus, chapter 21 especi ally, as immoral wretches and inhuman brutes. There it says, Zosailehu, etc , ' Walk not in the customs of the people, that I will cast out before thee.' But it became a custom to use a part of the passage and leave the oth-?r part away and accordingly, ironclad rules were made to strictly abstain from anything that non-Jews would practice. That way it came that the organ was banished from the synagogues because it is used in churches, not thinking that actually ' the Christ...

ST. PETERSBURG. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 February 1898

St. Petersburg. The anti-Simetic press is making much capital out of a forthcoming trial, at which some Jews in Plungiang (Kowno) will have to ; answer the charge of resisting authorities who had discovered an illicit still. On the 22nd March last three subordinate officials, who were in a state of intoxication, went to the ; house of the Jew Market, where, according to an informer, raisin wine (Kosher wine for Passover) was being made secretly and without a license. In this house they found nothing, I but a number of men and boys assembled out f side the house for curiosity's sake in order to (see the result of the search. When the three ''officials appeared one of them, who was quite besotted, drew a revolver and threatened to fire. The Jews took the weapon from him by force, and conducted him to the police-station. There the Director drew up an indictment charging the Jews with resisting the authorities i in the execution of their functions, and this | simple matter has grown int...

CRITERION THEATRE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 February 1898

CRITERION THEATRE. On Saturday night Mr. Frank Thornton concludes his successful season with the performance of ' The Private Secretary ' no surer proof can be given of the ability of a Theatrical manager in gauging the tastes and requirements of the play going public than the revival from time to time of the pieces originally brought out by him, Such reproductions of plays are obviously evidences of their previous powers to attract and entertain. The Sydney Professional Military Band gave their initial performance on Tuesday afternoon in Wynyard square, conducted by Mr. J. Devlin,. We understand periodical concerts will take place of this band which has attained a praiseworthy standard in individual and collective merit. Seated at. the dinner-table on board on ocean going steamer I recently overheard the following. ' Please pass some beef for a Jew.' Shortly afterwards the Jew was asked to hand some article, which he did saying, ' Some pig. for the Christian.' A gentleman near by s...

NEW ZEALAND LETTER. A REFLECTION ON JUDAISM IN WELLINGTON WELLINGTON, Jan. 26. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 11 February 1898

NEW ZEALAND LETTER. 14 ? A Reflection on Judaism in Wellington Wellington, Jan. 26. Nero fiddled whilst Rome was burning, and our Elders slumber whilst Judaism is in jeopardy. Such it seems to me is the case here. Sabbath after Sabbath our minister discourses to empty pews. With the exception of the President, Treasurer, Secretary, and occasion ally one or two grown up members of the com munity, the attendance at bynagogue is con fined to children. Even the executive officers, excepting those already mentioned, do not think it necessary to attend the weekly divine service. Members who a few years ago would have looked with horror upon any profanation of the Sabbath, now permit their children to attend race meetings and other unholy gather ings on the Lord's Day, without even uttering a protest, or exerting their authority to stay their offspring from committing such sin. m ? * ? 1 ? ?
