A bill to prevent Irish landlords raising rents after tenants havo effected improvements was read a second time in the Rouse of Commons by a majority of 89. The late Marquis of Ailesbury is said to have been absolutely penniless, and dependent on his sister, Lady Mabel, who married Siever, the bookmaker.

THE necessity of legislation in regard to the Afghans at Bourke being permitted to parade the j | streets of that town carrying' 'firearms was again brought into prominence by the occur rence o Monday last, in con nection with some religious celebration of the Fourke camel drivers. From the Western Herald we learn that the Af ghans marched in procession through the town, several of them armed with rifles. A stone was thrown at them by some larrikin, when one of the armed *aen levelled kis rifle at a white man whom he apparently sus pected as the offender. One of his companions struck up the barrel of the weapon, and by liis action fortunately leaves it an open question whether the Afghan really meant to fire or to merely threaten the person at ?whom he was aiming. CIVIL BUSINESS. Wood v. lson, £42 15s 10d, goods sup- plied. Verdict for plaintiff. Mr, T. Rolin for plaintiff. Hill v. Salter, claim for £343 11s 11d. This was a very important case, and occupied the court all Thursday afternoon and greater portion of Friday. Owing to pressure on our space we are compelled to omit the evidence. The jury, after an absence of some hours, were unable to agree and were discharged. The cose was then settled by arrangement between the parties, the plaintiff agreeing to accept £12 6s 8d and to waive all claim to a sum of £120 in dispute, each side to pay its own costs. Mr B. K. Wise (instructed by Mr. B. Booth) appeared fcr the plaintiff, and Mr. T. Bolin (instructed by Mr. C. H. Fitz- Gerald for the defendant.

DUBBO CIRCUIT COURT.   (Before his Honor the Chief Justice.) The Circuit Court was opened on Wednesday     morning at 11 o'clock by his Honor the Chief Justice. Mr. Cowper, Sheriff, and Mr. G. H. Taylor, J.P., Deputy Sheriff, occupied   seats on the Bench. Mr. T. Robin prosecuted on behalf of the Crown. BREAKING AND ENTERING. Walter Hough nod James Drew, two young fellows of about 20, were charged with breaking and entering the stables at the Bridge Hotel, Gilgandra, and removing therefrom two saddles and bridles. The accused, who were undefended, pleaded not guilty. Peti-   tioner gave evidence, and His Honor granted the petition, with costs. Mr. Rolin for petitioner. Hartnett v. Hartnett. — No appearance of respondent. The issues were adultery, habitual drunkenness, and cruelty. Peti- tioner gave evidence. His Honor found that there had been adultery, but it had been condoned ; on the other two issues he found for petitioner, and that the latter offences revived the adultery ; the question of marriage to stand over for production of further evidence.
