Already a com bined.effort il/ peltg.made through. the town and district, by the ladies, to obtain con tributions towards the upkeep of the Alex andra Cottage Hospital. The appeal is being made personally to all s'rts and conditions of people to show their practical sympathy with this most deserving institu tion by ggiving in accordance with their means. The services of a number of well known ladies have been listed in the good cause, and they may be depended upon to canvass tile town and district thoroughly. This manner of raising funds has proved most successful, and a decided improvement on the old style. The hospital is an institu tion where the sick and sufferine poor re ceive the most skilful nursing and the bet, medical attention free of cost. TO THE ED1TOR OF TsG'srTANuDARD. Sxn,-Ta it now a commencement is to be made to beautify the town by a short cut through the park I This is all well and good, and would be much appreciated, I am sure. What abhout finances P Again, according to a few known-alls there. are engineering difficulties to surmount. Fancy this, and who are these self opinioned persons, that they pose an engineers? Many years ago our council was constituted of amateur road and bridge-builders-C.E's., in fact. Enough. I think, with many others, that Councillor Leckil's idea of 90 per cent. being in favor of the new road has about been blown out. Why ? Because the road is not wanted. Surely the present road. perhaps a longer one, is good enough for all the traffic that will travel over it. Those wishing to walk can do so through the park, if a path is made. It wi!l be no great hardship. As to the new, road being a straight run to the railway gates, whereas the other will turn at the police camp, Lipscombe's, a...

A Pleasant Gathering. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 June 1909

A Pleasant Gathering. On Monday afternoon last, about 35 of the leading gentlemen of the town, accepted the kindly invitation of Mrs W. H. Whiting, to meet at the Exchange Hotel, and partake of a friendly glass of wine prior to her leaving that hostoliy, which has been purchased by Mr. Grant, and amost happy time was spent., .Mrp, Whiting .has. successfully conducted this hotel foro many years, and during that time has made hosts of friends, who are sorry that she has decided to relinquish the husiness. Mrs Whiting had the dining room nriely arranged, and tasty light refreshments, which wver ap. preciated. - In the unavoidable absence of Mr W. FT. Whiting, the chair was taken by Mr F. Wheeler, .T.P., .and after the toast a of "The liing" had been honored, he said that he hd pleasure in presiding over the gathering. Mrs Whiting had resided amongsts?thenm for the past 15 years, and during that time she had endeared herself to all by her kindnesses in all directions. Mrs Wh;ting contri...

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 June 1909

TO THE EDITOR OF THE BTANDARD. Smt,-As a supporter of the no new road movement, 1 ask permission to state through your columus that" Shell Back's " insinuating remarks regarding paid agents would only be made by one whose nature was devoid of higher principles. " Shell Back" cannot understand any of his neighbors' feelings that they have duties to verform that are beyond price, but seems to think all are like the auctioneer --com. every time. Perhaps he thinks that the business people situate between the bridge and police corner would be prepared to pay out, so that Councillor Leckie would not carry out his object in stopping the trtftic pssing this part of main street, and in its turn drive those business people to a site on the new main road. I fail to see how CouncillorLeekie's proposal would prevent business people building if they so wished. He will cer tainly gain his object in stopping the traflic going over the bridge, but he appears to be blind to the fact that there are bu...

Correspondence. [We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. NEW ROAD TO THE RAILWAY STATION. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 June 1909

Correspondence. [We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents]. NEW ROAD TO THE RAILWAY STATION. Smi,-" Shell Back," writing in your last issue re the above, says there are paid agents in this a"itation. Does he think every person is like himself, polluted and requires a tip. Shame! Good and true men and women with freehold pro perty have signed, only too pleased to have the opportunity. "Mud and Slush" is quite correct when he says Councillor Leekie's 90 per ,ent.'of town ratepayers being in favor of the new road is blown out. Poor Jack I To say such a5 foolish thing! He musthave dreamt it and it got on his nerves. "A Mother" might also have mentioned the drainage into the U.T. Creek. which, in summer time, is a veritable breeding ground for fever germs, and smells well, in fact. you could cut.. it with a knife. Mr. Editor will bear this out. Why do councillors not grapple with this work instead of worrying them selves grey over a road which...

Important to Horse Breeders. LICENSING OF STALLIONS. r - At the annual meeting of the Alexandra P. and A. Association, a letter was read from the Maryborough society, in which was enclosed the following scheme for considers tion, relative to the above and asking that the local association be represented at a con ference, to be held in Melbourne, on the 96th May. The scheme was read and discussed at some length, with the result that the Preci. dent, Mr. W. Lade, J.P., was deputed to attend and support the proposition. Mr. Lade informed us last week that the conference was a success, the scheme, with one or two amendments, being adoped, and instructions given to forward same to the Chamber of Agriculture for consideration, next month, at Bendigo. .The conference was held in the Royal Society Rooms, on Wednesday, of last week, and was attended by representatives of 19 societies. ýIq umn ra. & . qii ait ~ll d FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 1909. IT may be pretty safely said that never before was there so much interest dis played by so many people in such a variety of forms of sport and pastime as there is to-day. There are more kinds of recreation for out-of-door and in-doors, and the proportion of at any rate Anglo-Saxon communities taking part in them or encouraging others to do so is greater and growing larger. Some people view this development with more or less misgiving, and regard it as something in the nature of evidence of degeneration. It is pointed out, for instance, that the vocation of a successful pugilist is now more profitable than the position of a Prime Minister. But can sport and pastime be judged wholly by particular ex amples of excess and the occasional freaks of the devotees of one .or another of the many forms of popular recreation For those who realise that if we want sane minds in sound bodies under modern conditions of life we must have en...
