SYDNEY JOTTINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 10 September 1895

SYDNEY JOTTINGS. (BtJ.A.) i On paper, Parliament has 3one an immense amount of work this week, bavins got rid of the debate on the financial statement, and passed the Land and Income Tax Assessment . Bill through oommittee. This is the task the Government set itself, and it completed it at 7 o'clock this (Friday) morning. The pecu liarity of the circumstances surrounding legislative business is responsible ' i or the apparent expedition. As a matter of faot, the passing of the Assessment. Bill through tbe Assembly was regarded as merely formal. The Government repeated time atter time that the country had given its mandate that the Assessment Bill should be sent' to tbe Legislative Council in precisely the same shape, so far as its main provisions were con cerned, as it was rejected by that body in the Jast, Parliament. . Most of the party, and «,lao theiLabor Party, acnepted that dictum, and fed obediently into line behind the ^Pxemier, wittj the igeulfrthat ny the majority *'* bo s...

CHARGE OF BIGAMY. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 10 September 1895

CHARGE OF BIGAMY At the Police Court before Messrs Donaldson       P.M. and Cohen J.P. on Tuesday, the adjourned charge of bigamy against Mary Ann Daley or Harrington was gone into. Mr Wren prosecuted and Mr Robertson defended. The only novelty in the case as far as persons were concerned was the appearanc of two fresh witnesses. The nature of one is Thomas Gilpin, who it was alleged was the accused's #### husband. He is an old man was I###ubly attired, his hair evidently had been for many years stranger to brush and comb, for it was hanging in wild profusion over his face, and his features pinched, bare evidence of either privation or sickness. The other witness was William Hubner, near Corowa, who was present to the marriage of accused and Gilpin.               Sergeant Burnett : This prosecution is of a private character. SYDNEY JOTTINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 17 September 1895

P SYDNEY JOIITINQg, (By J. A,) The chief political event of the week has been Mr M'Millan's speech on the Uovern inent policy, Ab I predicated he would, he spoke to an unusually full Bouse, The oc casion was the debate on the adoption of the report of the Land and Income Tax Aesess pient Bill, At the particular moment, Mr HKHiilUn r-»R. there was an amendment to re-commit the Bill before the Chair. The debate should have been confined to that eimple proposition. As it was, however, MrM'Hillan spoke at large, and a Ursje quantity of his speech, and those speeches which immediately .followed, were Bhock- jngly out of order. It waa not until the whole position of the Government had boen discussed with considerable exhaustivencss that the Speaker woke up, and intimated that he found he bad made a mistake in per mitting the debate to take such a wide range, and that h« must stop it. A, little grumbling has been provoked by this, some members loudly asserting that in the case of no man bu...

BRAYO SALISBURY. [Newspaper Article] — Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser — 17 September 1895

BRAY0 BALISBDFY. . gome time ago the Great Powers made a demand on Turkey to carry out reforms in Armenia. This was in consequence of the wholesale massacre -of .Armenian Christians — men, women snd children by Turkish troops. Tlio atrocities were enough to heat the blood, for it sccounted snoh outrages as burial oljv*-, burning at the stake, the violation of women and the ruthless maiming and braining of young, children. 'England and ths other Great Powers demanded reforms, but as the Sultan dees not seem to .comply, Lord Salisbury has. ipld the Turknh Ambassador that further' opposition would mean, tbe dismemberment of Turkey. It is to be heped the Turk will be wiped out. j 'All the world know*, the Turk is an inn-niter in the countries he now. occupies in Europe, and in Asio.* He brought them under bis rnle by violenos, and in,«pite of hie real weakness up to the present, is allowed to retain them through the jealousies, of the Western Nation's.
