Epistles to the Editor. MADE IN AUSTRALIA. [Newspaper Article] — Donald Times — 18 April 1916

Episttes to the Editor. MADE IN AUSTRALIA. Sir,—Time was, and not very long ago. either, when one of the sun-i oigumcHts used by ihe smart salesman was that the article w;is 'imported." That word was the "Open Sesame' to the customer's pocket. There are few who can afford to put contumely on the sales man or the customer. Mo.-;t of us are guilty of having held the opini on that no good thing could come out of the manufactures of our own country. But the war has shown ui the error of our ways. We have had glorious testimony to the fact that, in the greatest game on earth, Aus tralians can, with a few months' training, amaze the world—can per form feats, which, from the point of view of the world's greatest mili tary authorities, are ranked with the impossible. The country which produces men of the stamp of those who havfe ^i ven it an imperishable record in history, is surely capable of taking care of itself in the peaceful avoca tions. It has no need to take a back seat in manufactu...

The Donald Times With which is incorporated the DONALD EXPRESS and LANDSBOROUGH TIMES. TUESDAY, APRIL 18, 1916 AUSTRALIA'S DEVELOPMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Donald Times — 18 April 1916

The Donald TiiijeS With which is incorporated the I Donald Express and Lands l rokoogh Times. I Tuksday, April IS, 1916 AUSTRALIA'S DEVELOPMENT. Thk war has altered our perspective in many ways. Let us hope the alterations make for wider and truer comprehension of what is necessary to preserve our national existence, and to put to better purpose than hitherto the magnificent heritage we enjoy in Australia. Oue thing stands out in this new perspective. It is that, if we are to hold this country, we must set to in earnest to develop it. The happy go-lucky, hit-or-oiiss fashion of do ing things in the bygone halcyon days, that will return no more for this or the succeeding generation, will not do any longer. There is a stern law behind the dictum that from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. The most fatuously self-complacent of us cannot assert that we have em ployed the talents entrusted to us in the shape of this great country to the best advantage. For th...
