YEA. ELECTION OF PRESIDENT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 September 1878

YEA. (PROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) ELECTION OF PRESIDENT. On councillors taking their feats on Satur day Or R. F. Taylor moved that Cr Quinlan be appointed president for the current year. He did so not as a mere act of courtesy, but as a matter of right. Three months ago Cr Quinlan had been elected to the presidentship, which since then he had filled in a fitting and satisfactory manner. oe trusted no couuceillor would oppose the motion, which would under any circumstances be carried, because a unanimous vote would be a pleasing assurance to Cr Quinlan that during his term of office he might rely on the sympathy and support of the entire council. Cr Ker was happy to second the motion, he could not go so far as Cr Qulnlan because he had not been present at meetings for the last three months, but. from what he knew of Cr Quinlan during a number of years, he was quite sure lihe would make a very good president. The motion was carried without dissent. Cr Quinlan felt thankful for the honor ...

ANNUAL HORSE PARADE. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 September 1878

'ANNUAL HORSE PARADE. -4 On Thursday, the 5th inst., the usual horse parade took place under the c auspices of the Upper Goulburn Agri- I cultural and Pastoral Association, and e there was a very large attendance of I those interested in the breeding of t horses throughout the disetict, and I much interest taken in the merits of the I several sires at the parade. In thoroughbred stock we must give r the first place to " Streak of Day," now the property of Mr Mayger, of Rivers dale, where he will during the coming t season hold his harem. "The Streak," as he is familiarly known, is a great favorite with owners, and his progeny realise good prices in any market. Mr Wallace, of the Acheron Station, r had on show a very fine entire, which was much, and deservedly, ad mired by all. He is a fine upstanding animal, well made throughout, and stands on splendid legs, and shows both I strength and speed. His services are restricted, and very properly so, being young, and will no doubt be in d...

HOME INCIDENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 September 1878

HOME INCIDENTS. A whole family has been murdered in Wales in a way which as the Spectator remarks, recalls Do Quince,'s account of the murders in Rateliffe Highway years ago, ascribed to the mere thirst for slaughter. At Llangibby, near Newport, Monmouthshire, a lad went to call a form labourer named Watkins to his work. when he saw the bodies of the man and his wife lying on the garden path, the throats of both being out. Shortly after a labourer passing by saw smoke issuing from the cottage and made his way in with a companion. Upstairs they found the bodies of three children all dead.-one lying with her head between a box acnd the bedstead, another under the bed, lying on its face, and the third in an inner room. The children were all young-eigh, five, and four years of age. The wounds on the children were more severe than those of their parents, and it would seem as if the father had been first attacked and stunned with a blunt instrument, his throat being afterwatds cut, and th...

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE STANDARD) [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 14 September 1878

(To TnE EDITOR or TIIE STANDARD) Sa,-bMay I crave a small space in your next issue to ask a question or two ? Some timo since a poor widow, who holds a license, not fifty miles from Alexandra, made application through a friend to a certain justice of the peace, for permission to hold a dance in her house, to which she had invited several respectable residents of that outside district, and the permission for some unknown cause (some say spite) was withheld. Well sir, as the feast was ready prepared and the guests assembled, the dance took place. The police were Informed of the fact, and had to do their duty, though no doubt a very unpleasant one ; and the widow was brought to court, to answer the crime of having a dance without a permit. Twice had she to come to court and at last the P.M., dis-. missed the case I There is an old proverb, "A man with a little brief authority," &e. Let me ask why not have granted the permission in the first place! and thus have saved the poor w...

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 21 September 1878

MELBOURNE LET TER. (PROM OUR OWN CORRiESPONDENT.) !T'he political atmosphere is rather peaceful at present, for, with the excep. tron of Mr Berry's denunciation of the Opposition at Dalylenford, and Mr Ser vine's wrathful rejoiner in Parliament, there have been no overt demonstra tions of hostility between political parties. It is to be feared, however, that the existing calm is only that w!hich proverbially precedes a storm, and the gradual approach of the rival Reoform Bills to the Chamber from whence they did not originate betokens an early collision. The Government Loan Bill for £5,000,000 has passed safely through the Assembly, and strongly as lion. members in another place iar likely to object to it, it is niuprolablo that they will precipitate the comning conflict, unless indooeed they adopt the proverbial philosophy that it is tas well to be hung for stealingK a sheep as a lamb. Incidentally an important question was asked by Mr Service the other evening, touching the bona l...

On the evening of Friday, the 13th i st., a concert was held at Mr O. isgrovo's llotel, M olesworth, which, owing to the praisoworthy efforts of .\lessr Merry and Lamontr , proved to be a mrosr decided success, and resulted in tile hindsomre sum of £15 being handed over to the charity, the large room being uncomfortably crowded; and soI eoergetic were the two gentle men named that even those who had to stand outside and on thu verandah were not allowed to do so without being in possession of a ticket.
