The Press and the Cable -»—Our New York cotemporaries comment nt length npon the lamented disaster of the failure to connect the two continents. The Express states that a thorough-goi ng, old fashioned citizen, who bears a national name, though not fame, says it was not designed, after the Declaration of Independence was adopted, that there should be any closer union between Old England and America 1 Providence, he says, is against the union I If that citizen is a prophet, then it is all up with the connection —but as Providence has tolerated clipper •hips and quick steamers, we do not think any one bas a right to invoke its name against so great an event. The Tribune thinks the present machinery for laying the | wire can never succeed, and wonders at) the want of wisdom and recklessness of the capitalists engaged in the enterprise. Nevertheless, it says, by land or sea, Greenland! and the North Atlantic, Oregon or Siberia, the telegraph must be made. ' The Tikes says the ex...

Tbe Potato, its History, fco I ' 1' A correspondent nsko why the potato is colled the Irish Potato 1 To answer this question it will be necessary, and perhaps not unprofitable, to give some of its history. The first potato ever jrrown in Enrope was raised on Sir Walter Raleigh's estate in Ireland, the seed lieing taken by him from Virginia about 1602. For many years, although eaten, they were' (rrown moreins objects of curiosity than profit. Their'culture, however, continued to increase, nnd during the wars that dcvnsled Ireland towards theendof the seventeenth century, when the growing grain was destroyed by the soldiery, the potato crop served to keep tbe inhabitants from starvation. It could not be destroyed bv fire, and in fact, nothing but digging up the* crop could destroy it, which was together too much like work for soldiers.audtoo long a job,and so the potatoes were left to the hungry people, for which they were, no doubt, tery thankful. , became popular After ibis ...
